Have been saving for a while, and offered a contribution for my birthday towards a nice set of clippers. Used some liveryman ones the other day which whipped through my mares coat so quickly. Basically want to get some Heinegers/ Liveryman/ Lister and wondering what people would recommend for a hairy cob? She's already been clipped and will probably need doing at least 2-3 times more this winter, plus I keep her legs fully clipped out all year round. Her coat is quite thick so need something that will do the job without overheating. Got on well with the Liverymans as well - was able to clip her legs without a twitch for the first time since i've had her - the clippers my friend lent me are a lot noisier (think small aeroplane taking off!).

So basically, recommendations please! She's brilliant with clipping (except legs which may now be sorted!) so not worried about them being cordless or anything.

Thanking you muchly! :)

I have Wolseley Swift clippers for my two cobs. If I bought some more clippers I would get the Hauptner 2000, they are light, quiet and fairly heavy duty. Have a look at www.peasridge.co.uk they have excellent clipper reviews and it makes them easy to compare.

I have heiniger Delta 3 clippers.

They are amazing! I have a Freisian x Fell, and her fur was an inch and a half thick when I took it off yesterday!

They have 3 speeds, so setting 1 is good for faces and delicate areas, setting 2 for the bod, and 3 for legs and other particularly furry parts.
I've used Liveryman and Wolesly, but these are my favorite by far.

They are very heavy duty, and may make your arms ache if you are doing more than 1 a day!

I have the lister star, quite qiet and light. Hets through my hairy cobs feathers and thick coat quite easily. There are probably are more heavy duty clippers put there but I need a quiet pair and they are fab .

Right, have saved some pennies, done some research, and utterly confused myself!

Are clippers with a higher wattage 'better'? Is a higher rpm 'better'?! Found some wolseley's with a 2 year warranty. And now getting so confused!!! Someone at the yard has recommended Listers as they are 'British' but does this actually make them better than the Hauptners and Heinegers??

My mare is pretty much a yak and it takes me forever to clip her so want something thats up to the job (been looking at heavy duty clippers as although I only have the one, my friends cheaper clippers that I borrowed really seemed to struggle, and I want these to be a long-lasting purchase), but also something that isn't too noisy - i've discovered I can clip her head and legs without a twitch if I use Listers/ Liveryman rather than the Dextella (which I have been informed are a chinese imitation and are VERY noisy).

Please help before my brain actually explodes!

I have some Liveryman Arena Blue clippers and have to say they are great. They were cheap compared to others, and clip my hairy beasts with ease. I am a total Liveryman convert, and have their Element trimmer which does my mares teddy bear legs once a month. Highly recommended!
Could you go to your local tack shop and talk to someone before you buy, about wattage, rpm and things like that?

Oh also, if you buy from a tack shop they should be able to tension them properly for you when you buy them, and teach you how to do it yourself (if you don't already know how). x

Useful to know, thanks. Esp as I also have to trim her legs regularly! Yeah could go to a tack shop but would feel slightly guilty then leaving and finding them much cheaper online, and also don't think either of the local tackshops are actually very helpful when you go to ask for advice. my other feeling is they are going to try to recommend whatever make they have in stock rather than actually necessarily what is best which is why I thought lots of opinions on here might help (or may just confuse me even more!)

We have Liveryman Arena and they took Fany from this

I have lister Stars, they clip my hairy welsh D no problem, and a friend recently borrowed them and did 4 in one day and said they didnt struggle at all.

I have Liveryman Mustang, ancient but clip the cob fully in about an hour. They are loud though!
I've also got some called Premier, Lister blades fit them. Much quieter but they get quite hot after about half an hour going through thick, cob coat. Clipping my friend's TBxWB was totally fine though.
Whatever set you get, make sure your blades are kept sharp enough!

On a more serious note, please help my poor little brain can't cope with this and is going to explode!

Heineger Delta 3
Wolseley Hunter
Some kind of Liveryman!? (and behave people!)
Some kind of Lister!?

i like wolsley swifts with A2 blades , cope with most horses. for a hairy one you really want a med/heavy duty clipper otherwise you will burn out the motor. you need A2 blades which are medium, fine blades could struggle if not exceptionally clean and give a 'skinned' look. you need an extension cable with a circuit breaker to be safe. you need to oil blades frequently when clipping, moreso with a hairy beast. and you need to choose a clipper which suits your handspan and arm strength.

Yeah was looking heavy duty cos really I want something that will last and last. Sure I read somewhere the wolseley swifts have a plastic head (or could be imagining!) and are somewhat less durable? And yup extension cable and circuit breaker already in use, as is a lot of clipper oil! How often do you suggest oiling the blades whilst clipping? (and yes I realise how long is a piece of string!)

i have several sets of wolsley swifts never had a head go on one yet.. my clippers get a lot of work and all sets have been very reliable. although they are serviced and PAT tested anually, and repaired as necessary (not often) got listers as well .. they are slightly fussier over hair quality and direction of clipVhair growth. got some heigners too they are light and quiet ideal for the doped ones/clipper shy ones thouogh they dont give such a good close clip as the listers or wolsleys. wolsleys give the best finish,on different hair types IMO.
