Well my shetland Rocky has been extremely itchy this winter, rubbing bits bald etc.
Today we finally managed to clip him only to discover the strangest rash type thing on him. It looks like an allergy to me? His skin is bumpy and he has random little scabs on him but they are mainly on his neck and face, they almost look like chicken pox and are VERY itchy for him! I'm calling vet to come this week but was wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before?

Also he was sold to me as a mini shetland with some falabella in him which I never thought he did have, I assumed he was actually full mini shetland but seeing him clipped, he does look as though he could have some falabella in him? Or do all mini shetties look like this clipped? Lol.

Nor for me!
Will be interested to see his skin as my cob has the same problem although her shoulder area is rubbed down to the skin I think its because of her having her rug on for the last 2 weeks! I was told she has a dust allergy when we bought her? but not sure as she is fine on straw and no problems breathing at all in her stable and they have been in for the last 2 weeks.

Friends shetland had exactley the same rash when she was clipped this winter and last, it was caused by lice. Have you gave him a really good check espesially (sp) in his mane and dock?? We just clipped friend ponio and bathed her in lice shampoo then rugged her up to dry off and when dry put spot on on her. Lice disapeared in a couple of days and rash slowly went!!!!

This was my shetland who was also really itchy, he rubbed half of his mane out, most of his tail and had big bald pathes on him. I started to clip the other side of him then thought I should take some pics first!

You cant see his skin properly but he had big scabs all over him where he has scratched himself raw.
His feed hadnt changed and i sprayed him just incase he had lice or something although none of my others were itchy. I was at a loss so I clipped him and he was much better after that. I gave him a good bath in tea tree shampoo after as his skin was so scurfy.

I said if he started again this winter I would get him blood tested but so far he is ok.

I am now wondering if he had such a build up of grease in his coat it was irritating his skin. This winter, although you can lose your hand hin his coat, his coat gleems and looks really healthy, very different from last year.

My mini Shetland had an itchy rash all over. For her, she had allergies to certain types of feed containing sugarbeet and also LICE! I treated her with some Coopers once she was clipped. All rashes disappeared and her coat grew back normally. I think these mini's are quite prone to lice with their thick coats.

It's probably lice. It's the right time of year for them to be at their worst. There's all sorts of preparations you can buy but many of them - especially the powders - don't work at all. An insecticidal shampoo will work but watch his eyes. Also Frontline Spray (dog strength). Whatever you use, remember to do it again after 10 days as the eggs are unharmed and will hatch out and repeat the infestation. Remember too that lice can get into your grooming kit, rugs, bedding, YOU, and other horses in contact with your horse so treat all the above with the same zapping products.

He looks lovely by the way, my little shettie was just as fine boned under all that hair, he looked like a mini section A in the winter when he was clipped, i used to drive him so needed some hair to be removed to stop him sweating.

with regards the itching, its a fair chance to be creepy crawlies, all mine got them last year from the little mini shetties to my big 16.3 WB, all looked like your little man, and they drove them mad with itching!! the only thing that worked for mine in the end was Switch, its a cow fly pour on, its not licenced for horses but i tried all the other treatments, coopers was recommended by the vets, but i used it three times and it still didnt get rid of them. i had all their rugs cleaned and sprayed them after for good measure, thankfully they did finally go.

the vets said they possibly picked them up from the sparrows in the roof, i'm around 1/2 mile from any other horses and dont take them out as their all retired/unbroken so couldnt understand where the critters came from !

best of luck sorting your little man out, he's lovely and love the markings!
