Clipping a Cushings pony

My friend has a 30yr pony with Cushings, his coat is double the thickness it used to be and constantly shedding. She asked me to clip him next weekend. Does anyone clip their Cushings pony in summer time? Any advice re the coat of a Cushings pony? Thanks

Personally if he were mine and he still had a very thick coat then I would be clipping it off in this weather. A lot of people with horses who dont have cushings clip all year round so dont think it will cause your friends pony much problem. As long as you make sure hes warm enough if it turns cold at night you should be ok.

2 of mine dont have cushings but because they're old they dont seem to lose their coat very well anymore - I gave them both clips about a fortnight ago. Makes them far more comfortable.

I used to clip mine all the year round..she would have overheated otherwise and it meant that she could still go out and party instead of being retired in a field. She finally died at 24, but had a really good life up to that point and only deteriorated in the last 2 months, when she was PTS

I lost my old pony in Jan this year aged 40. For the last 2 or 3 years he went really really hairy in winter and it didn't seem much less in summer. Think it was an age thing as he didin't have any other cushings symptoms. But I did clip him in summer. Only a blanket clip as he was out at night and he wasn't carrying much weight so didn't want him to get cold in the night when the temp dropped a bit. He seemed a lot happier once he had been clipped. he was black too which didn't help. But when really hot I kept him in during the day and out at night.

Thanks everyone, I didn't want to do the little guy any harm, he's a loan pony and I think he has been clipped in previous homes. He's just a big furball and I think he would be much happier..
