It’s late Feb and we’re gearing up for our first year of showing. I’ve been recommended to give our Welsh B a light clip to take that wirey regrowth away and then rug up extra heavy to help get his summer coat quicker. TBH it will be another week before I even get round to doing the clipping.

Any other thoughts on this?

It’s daylight hours that make summer coats grow, not over-rugging them.
My lot are all shedding now so 3 or 4 annoying weeks of hair should see the coats mostly through, but I would clip if needed for comfort in work
Thanks! Another tip was to keep the lights on longer during the winter days?

I just clip whenever I want with a fade into the legs so there are no lines. I wouldn't attempt to mess with natural hair cycles, just ensure a decent balanced feed with with appaopriate evels of vitamine E and biotin. A good old hot towelling before nd after clipping and then once a week, a decent rug with a shiny inner like they almost all have now anyway, and they tend to look naturally shiny and healthy with a correct coat 2-3 weeks later

I'm about to clip my native looking at next week's temps. Last year I clipped mid Feb & you could see leg marks showing in May - but I can't blend.

The unclipped one is shedding like crazy. Rooni is a bit wiry but not as bad as when I did him beginning of the month. So I’m leaving it on the pretence that his summer coat must be on the way 🫣

We're showing people - you don't want to clip once already shedding as it will spoil the summer coat. If not shedding you're fine but if already shedding I wouldn't. In that case I wouldn't over rug, just make sure not to get chilly as will hold onto the coat and good thorough grooming each day will encourage the coat. Leaving the lights on in the stables for longer can help encourage them to shed too.
