I have one horse with rainscald and recently bought our own clippers

I plan on clipping three of them this year including the one with rainscald. Is there any chance of it spreading to the others? How do i prevent this? is there a way of disinfecting the blades between horses?

Rainscald isnt spreadable. But being a free lance clipper think its good practice to clean clippers between each use. 1. it stops spreading anything and 2. it helps keep your clippers in good condition. I still use the same clippers my dad bought me 15 years ago.

You can buy stuff in the tack shops but its expensive. Surgical spirit is just as good and alot cheap. You can buy it at the chemist in little bottles. I use cotten wall the wipe the clippers all over take the blades off clean all the head of hair aswell as the blades and again wipe over with the sugical spirit. I do this between every clip without fail.:)

thanks i have surgical spirits!

I wasnt planning on clipping anyone else's horses just my own :) sorry i didnt make that clear. I have three that need doing this year and one has rainscald.

We have never managed to get quite on top of it so i was planning on clipping so i can treat it better. She also gets very very itchy when she moults (heavy coat) so am hoping a good clip will help this.

I would still clean inbetween each of your own horses, espeacaially if there a bit scabby as it does clog up the clippers. Have lots of oil ready to help keep the running well through the clip.

I expect it will help clear it up as youll be able to get right in there and treat it.

Yer i cant be doing with moulting coats either, if there in work and sweating alot it can't be comfy!!:)

thats the hope :)

And thank you, this is my first set of clippers and doing it myself so its good to know these things. I will make sure to clean between the horses. I bought oil when i bought the clippers.

Plan on doing a fairly big clip on the other two even though they are not in very hard work because they are SO hairy!

will rug up suitably.

m sure youll be fine. Thats how i learnt, i had a horse as did my mum and sister. My dad was fed up with paying for so much clipping every winter, so got me a pair of clippers and said if you want your horse done its up to you!!!
Luckly my mums horse was the easiset horse in the world to practice on he even lowered his head for his ears to be done!! It still took me 4 hours the first time:eek: and that was with the legs on!! I can now do that in half hour. Practice makes perfect.:)

Probaly easisest to do full clips for your first time too, lines are me enenmy!;)
Good Luck.:)
