A couple of days ago I raised this issue within another post but thought it would be better to start a new one.......so here goes:
Close to my yard is an Arab stud. Some of their horses wear plaited tail guards on the bottom part of their tail when they are out. It appears the bandaging is their to protect the bottom 2-3 inches of their docks as these have been completely shaved/clipped out leaving the lowest part completely bald. Can anyone explain why this is done as I'm intrigued. I should also say not all of the horses have this done - just some.

My Arab has her tail pleated and lift off the ground otherwise it drags on the ground and get dirty and damaged, I know alot of the show Arabs will have their tails kept in sort of bag things or bandaged to keep them immaculate for showing, I can safely say I have never seen someone shave the bottom of an Arabs dock for showing reasons. Go along and ask them I'm really curious now!

hmmm...one of my polo ponies has that...although i didn't realise it was deliberate! maybe it is to keep it short...probably an easy way of keeping a horse's tail, especially if you have a lot!

They definately wouldn't do it for show purposes.... maybe it's for stud purposes? Are you sure they have shaved their docks and not just bandaged the tail to keep it clean?

Yes, def the bottom part is bald! They use the bandages which are in three parts at the end. When I next see them at a show I'll ask them as not sure I can trundle up to the front gate and ask!!!LOL Perhaps I could secretly lurk into their fields and take pics! HEHE
The tails do become shorter so maybe it is for stud purposes?
