Clipping dogs for summer?

Summer in NYC is upon us, and I am contemplating, yet again, partially clipping the pug's coat for summer. He was neutered way too young (eight weeks) and as a result has a coat as dense as a Husky's. I am not thinking of clipping the whole coat, but rather around his neck rolls, where the coat is very thick. And again, it would be so that the hair is a couple of centimetres long, rather than a couple of inches.

Good idea or bad idea? We're about to leave the city until August, so he will be outdoors most of the time.
 
I'd much rather a dog be a bit on the chilly side then too warm. I clip my dog fully out each summer as he gets far too warm (hes a hungarian puli...but with no dreadlocks) and gets quite itchy if it grows too long.

I'd say go for it. You'll know soon enough if you need to clip more or less hair off.

If it was me, I'd take all the hair off so cool air can circulate to his skin to keep him cool (as I'm sure your aware pugs can have a tough time cooling themselves down) and once he has a cosy bed at night he should have no problems :)
 
I fully clip a black mongrel with a very dense coat as she is way to hot with it left on. I also clip the belly and neck of my Border Collie as that gets very long and full of grass seeds and as she is always going into a muddy pond it saves on he being black and smelly! I redo her in the autumn so she doesn't get mud clots on her belly.
 
Excellent. I think I've made my decision. Though he's pretty fit for a pug (walks two hours every day) the heat does get to him. I keep him on the thin side for summer, and that helps somewhat, but his coat really is unlike any other pug coat I've come across.

Clipped out neck and a dawn walking regimen, here we come! :D
