Hi, our little Section A is getting quite sweaty during his evening schooling sessions with me (yes I'm an adult on a 12hh pony, I await the related comments I usually get) and I am taking him in his 1st M&M class in a couple of weeks. Can I clip him at all for winter showing? He's going to be doing Trailblazers Dressage as well through the winter as well as the odd lead rein jumping and fun classes with my 4 year old. I was hoping to blanket clip as he doesn't need a hunter clip and I know WPCS rules state they can be clipped for winter welfare but not allowed to be freshly clipped for spring.
Can anyone shed any light or offer some advice?
Thanks :)

Pretty sure all the olympia ponies maybe other than maybe some heavily rugged 'B's will be (fully) clipped?

That's what I thought but with him being predominantly a lead rein and first ridden pony I don't want him too fresh.

I would of thought a full clip would take away the pony's natural state that they're supposed to be shown in??
WPCS also say legs shouldn't be clipped....
This showing game is so confusing, it's been a good 10 years since I've shown anything!

I'm taking him out and about this winter to get him used to the whole competition scene so my two girls can go out next summer for their first season and have fun and not worry about him being good or not, so a blanket clip would be perfect without having to be obsessive about rigging but would it be acceptable in m&m class?? Working hunter it would be but not sure on other breed classes.

It's only one show on 16th Nov so may try and wait until after to clip him so he's as natural as possible :)

PS sorry for the essay

You can clip him but leave his legs on. As it's just one show for experience I'd do the clip that suits the pony rather than stressing about what is best for the ring. :)

Thank you, I know he's supposed to be tough and hairy but I hate leaving them in for the night with sweaty bits lol. I'll see how it's ends up (it's his first time!) and im only going to the show for his experience so he can take my two girls out next season to have fun without it being too daunting for him :) not bothered about ribbons although it would be nice haha

If local show I would have no qualms about clipping at all, I have shown my D blanket clipped and full clipped before as showing certainly doesn't take priority over all his other activities that he definitely needs clipping for!

When she was younger I used to take a strip off the underside of neck and belly of my Welsh A and we did a bit of showing (affiliated) with her and lots had odd bits of hair taken off them.

Brilliant I'll just go for it then :) his welfare and the girls safety is more important than ribbons anyway.
Thank you everyone :)[/QUOTE
For the future, it's usually possible to fully clip a native yet leave beard and feather on- just don't clip the back of the leg (over tendon) from where the feathers start, and don't clip the coronet band like you would otherwise.

You'll actually find that most ponies at Olympia will have been carefully clipped with the legs blended in.
It is normal to clip all M&Ms in winter just don't take off legs, on welshies you can take off the face as well but not on highlands, fells etc

Not sure on the specifics for NFs but it's usually the beardy bits that are meant to stay so half a head wouldn't actually fulfill this unless you do the reverse and clip face and blend in to jaw line.

Just wondering, can the face of a New Forest be fully clipped, as apposed to half the face?

An adult NF can have the jaw trimmed fully no beardy bits should be left, as long as you leave the whiskers and they can be fully clipped out apart from the legs, manes and tails are usually carefully pulled so they still look natural but tidy.

Thank you :) I'm going to hold off until his new rug arrives, it's gone below freezing this morning, had to break the ice on the water trough this morning and hosepipes were frozen solid :( don't want to put him out in his neckless rug with all his woollies gone!

If you are doing affiliated LR classes do not clip any more off than a bib. Any other classes you can take anything but not the legs!
