I always do a full clip at the end of feb. However this has been his first year going rugless through the winter, he lives out 24/7. which has been brill as he and I have both had the winter off.

Doing a full clip end of feb, as will start bringing him back to work very soon and he sweats like anything. and yes before it is mentioned, plenty warm rugs available, layers to.

Now, my concern is he has such brilliant oils in his lovely thick wooly coat, my clippers need to get through it ! would you put a light weight rug on him now and clip end feb, or just leave naked and clip (obviously he needs to be dry) ?

I wouldnt clip that late in the year unless I was clipping all year round! but I would put a light weight on before just to keep him lean to make him easier to clip!

oh thats cool then! I clip my mare all year round now but I've always used to make her last clip around the end of Jan! but thats cool if hes always clipped that late! my mare usually loses her coat really early!

The oil will make no difference as long as he's clean. You do need to try and get the dust etc out his coat tho.I'd rug a couple of days before (full neck) and spend an industrious few days grooming him like mad. Or stable him and do the same.
