Clipping in preparation for the show season

When should you do it?

My welsh A will be sold/loaned in April and I want to do some shows with him first for experience and hopefully add to his value. Last summer he didn't really lose his coat, and was still a hairy fluff ball in April. I have been advised to clip him before he starts to lose his coat, but not very experienced with showing so no idea what I am doing

Any showing experts out there?

I start to clip Inky in March in preparation for the show season. it does take about 2-3 clips before the coat comes through nice ( as oppose to wirery ( sp?) ) i clip every couple of weeks though so this isnt a problem for me

PM FMM, I'm sure her (well, her sisters) lot have just been clipped

I take it you'd be doing natives, because we never used to clip ours as if the judge can tell you have clipped you should get penalised, and of they can't tell you clipped then it was abit pointless to clip. Also, any clips past november apperantly affect the sshine of next seasons summer coat( apparently)

It doesn't say no clippin here, but is does say as natural as possable

That's a really interesting comment as i had a judge tell me it was Ok to clip as i drove my pony. She had a trace clip. Doesnt help MH much though!

From what I have seen MH the ponies that have a summer coat for the early shows have been rugged up and kept in.

I'd def ask FMM!!!

Ridden welsh ponies can be clipped in winter but fresh clips in spring are frowned upon.
If you do clip then leave her legs well alone. If you take her leg hair off you will be penalised

WPCS rules are very clear about clipping
Here is what the WPCS says:
Animals 4 years old or over, which have been clipped for winter activities can be shown. Fresh clipping for spring shows is not permissible. Judges must take special notes of this. Legs must not be clipped.

Any affiliated society (BSPS, NPS, PUK etc) will stick by those rules.

If your going to clip you need to do it ASAP before her summer coat starts coming through or you will damage the summer coat.

Ha! Thank you. That makes sense as my pony's clip was growing out. The judge commented on the fact she was clipped and said she shouldn't be. The minute I said she was a driving pony he was incredibly apologetic, sort of said if I had known...etc. Didnt bother me as I hate showing anyway!

Just found that it reinforced what I had always felt.

Is it the same for all M&M as often the judges are not necessarily Welsh Breeds judges. Not really in to showing!!!

Im now very confused, I as going to clip him to get the summer coat through quicker, so technically by the time he was shown he wouldnt be clipped

I would leave alone and start rugging to get him to loose his coat quicker.
