My Fell pony has sweet-itch so is rugged all the time. I have noticed that she's been sweating under the rug so was wondering about clipping her out. There is plenty of shade in her field and it can be breezy as it's also on a bit of a slope. I'm not bothered about showing her, but wondered if it may help her SI too if she's not getting so hot? Is it going to make much difference or should I not bother as it'll soon be winter again?!

I used to clip out Cairo and Jemima in the summer so they got so hot just standing around due to their thick coats. Do remember that they will need a cotton sheet on if the sun is strong to stop sunburn and a no fill t/o if it goes very wet and cool until the coat is looking like a fine summer coat again - normally within two weeks or so.

She will feel better for being cool with itchy skin.

I clipped my 17yo welshie 2 weeks ago, though as we aren't vain and contrary to popular opinion I just did a blanket clip as I still need him to live out pref unrugged as much as possible. Best thing I have done, his coat came through quite thick this year (I looked at another welshies the other day and it was much finer... He was getting too hot in the field and it had meant that working him was really difficult, and he needs work to keep the weight off :)

If it makes your horse more comfortable it is the right thing to do. You have to rug her anyway.

Why not just do a chaser clip first and see how she gets on if you're hesitant?

my cob gets clipped out all summer due to his coat growing in too thick and he gets very uncomfortable and sweaty just standing in the field. Beware of sunburn though and you will need to be prepared to swap rugs about depending the weather untill a fine summer coat grows back in. my boy normally either has a fly sheet on or a lightweight no fill turnout if its raining.

Thank you. She wears a Premier Equine SI rug ALL the time so that isn't a problem and being black too I'm sure she gets hotter anyway (despite the white rugs!).
