Hi, I clipped Wings today, and gave him a hunter clip, however I'm considering taking off his legs too, as it will be easier to manage in the mud, and I will compensate by having stable bandages for him.

I was wondering how you go about clipping legs? Do you just do it the same as the rest of the body and go against the hair, or do you do something differently? Also, are there any cons to taking the legs off, other than the fact he might get cold (but as I said, he'll wear stable bandages).

Thanks :D

I always clip legs off the first time I clip them out. Yes, just clip against the hair. Don't worry about them getting cold!!! Have just clipped all of mine and they are out 24/7 without rugs on!! I find clipping their legs lessens the risks of mud fever and it is alot easier to dry them quickly - I always clip any feathers off all year round and my hairier ones get the back of their legs clipped all year round from the knee down - when just doing this I clip down from the knee to the hoof - the hair lies better that way.

some horse find it a bit tickly so take your time!! but i think its great for mud etc although i tend to leave legs on for cubbing and off for hunting!! a great trick also is to clip body with fine blades and then legs with normal blades this looks quite smart but still leaves them with a tad more hair on for cold days!! not a lot but a bit !!

1st clip of the year i take legs off...next clip (today!) i will leave legs on as growth there isnt sufficent, however next clip legs will get done again.
My mare is tickley to do her legs so I have to jsut take my time :)
