Just curious how often people have to clip their dogs nails, our last dog was maybe once every 18 months if that, the girl we have now is probably the same but the boy seems to be every 6 months and he's the one that ends up being sedated by the vet to have them done, I can't understand why his grow so fast.

Never done any of mine, all have been labs, all indoor kept. Approx 5 miles a day walk with about a mile on lead on pavements.

Mine has the tips off about 1 a week. He has really chunky nails and that's all you can take off at a time. He's 99% cross country exercise. Road work doesn't really do much. Being a dober he has a high nail set. I file them sometimes with an acrylic nail file

I've got one who gets done weekly, they grow at an extraordinary rate. Dog #2 gets a token amount trimmed maybe once a month. Same breed, same amount of exercise, mixed surfaces.

non of mine have ever needed it doe regularly until they got old and had less exercise and the foot conformation changed.
I would rather do some road walking than have to trim nails-dew claws need keeping an eye on but I rarely (once or twice per year) have to do them either.

every couple of months

(*whispers* there is a nail maintanence group on FB who sit and file every night !! :O. )

i did learn there though, that keeping them short recedes the quicks.

"What do you do for a fun evening in?" "Oh, I file my dogs nails" 😂😂

In answer to the question - not as often as I should! 4 dogs, identical exercise, very different nails and nail growth - Hoovers are lovely & never need doing (I suspect he bites his nails when we aren't around), Islays are awful & grow quickly, Flick's tend towards long so need to keep an eye on them, never need to do Amy's which is a relief as she is an absolute ****** to have them done!

Fortnightly check and trim anything that touches the ground. The three lurchers get done standing up with feet picked up like horses. The terrier sits on the counter top. I have found that not restraining them and a bit of desensitisation with some treats lead to a more relaxed session. Some dogs find it painful though if the clippers are not sharp or strong enough for their nails and pinch them, worth investing in really sturdy guillotine clippers. One of my terriers grew some extra thick nails in her old age and hated them clipped but I believe she found them very uncomfortable.

my lurcher has to be done regularly, usually once a month ish., she hates it!!!!....my collie cross is now 9 and I have done hers once!!!! they walk on the same tracks but lurcher is very light on her feet so I assume that is why hers done wear down much....

One of my lurchers once took a bad tumble cornering during agility when wearing a boot over a cut pad as he obviously did not manage to grip the ground as he would have done with his nails. Too short is as bad as too long.

my bedlington will lie on his back and let me do anything with them, I have cutters, electric file, or sometimes my own nail files. ive done them ever since I first got him at 8 weeks so he just thinks its normal behaviour. My whippet however is a nightmare! I got her at about 7 months old and I suspect she was never done before then, its traumatising, she screams, cries, drags her feet away no matter what I use, I find the easiest is to bundle her up in her duvet and just get a friend to hold her and me crack on quickly. and loads of treats straight after. It is now 3 years down the line getting easier, and luckily she only needs doing every few months.

my bitch gets hers done twice a week or weekly at least. Older poodle gets his done every couple of weeks. Old border terrier gets his done maybe once a month. All kept on same exercise patterns etc. Bitch also needs a hair cut weekly, older poodle monthly and old border terrier's coat still good but doesn't need as much because it's slowed down. Hair and nails often grow at similar rates.

As little as possible! The two labs rarely need done as our big yard is concrete, they wear them down. The Bassett however (Stumpy!) because their feet are on an angle, she doesn't wear them down and we have to keep an eye and clip them regularly.

This involves putting her on the sofa on her back and pinning her in as the second the nail clippers come near her she howls the place down. (Her quick has never been nicked by us, she's just a bloody drama queen!)

Two chihuahuas, checked/trimmed every 6-7 weeks in winter, maybe not so often in summer, as out in the garden/patio.

dremmel !!! some people are obsessed!

Dremmels are great if your dog jumps up and tends to scratch stuff, you can round off the edges a wee bit. Also some dogs don't like the clipping noise or the squeezing sensation that go with nail clipping, so dremmel helpful for that too. Not an obsession, just a different tool.
