Clipping now!?

My daughter’s new pony arrived in February with a fresh blanket clip.
It still looks like it was done last week! The clipper bits have some summer coat coming through, but the unclipped, long Welsh coat on her back, although it’s moulted a bit is still mega long and looks awful.

Would you just clip the lot off?? Or leave it and keep brushing??

They’re all hanging onto their winter coats this year but this was the only one with a blanket clip and it’s just so obvious.

Is she grey or coloured? They can get sunburnt on their pink bits if you clip this late, so you'd have to rug her for a bit if you do. If you do clip, use blades that are as coarse as you can. About 5mm cut ideally.

Also, is she an older pony? Hanging on to a winter coat is a common sign of Cushing's, so that's worth checking out.

Have you got a shedding blade? They are brilliant for removing old winter coats. Like this.

We have just clipped our Shetland with a set of covercote blades - seems to have left roughly the equivalent of about a summer coat for him and he looks far tidier, and is far happier!

Covercote blades are a godsend indeed, would highly recommend them

If you aren't worried about showing or anything like that then I would clip to keep pony comfy personally but you do run the risk of pony looking like a scraped carrot all summer

I would just clip it off lots of horses are clipped all year round.

Show cobs are often clipped all year round - The blanket clip would annoy me so I would take the lot off and use a rug if needed!

I'd also suggest the covercote blades. Coblet gets clipped every spring / summer with them
