Clipping problems - too woolley!!

Blue gets really woolley with his winter coat and i'd like him to have a blanket clip this winter as i found he lost a bit of weight with a full clip last year.

Only my problem is where he gets really woolley i find it really hard to do the lines straight so would it be better to stick a rug on him over night soon? Or maybe give him a full clip in about 2 weeks which will then grow back quite quickly but not as hairy so i'd be able to give him a blanket clip a few weeks after that?

Stick a rug on him to stop him fluffing up too badly,and clip him in a couple of weeks in a blanket, no point clipping him all out if he is loosing weight and you dont need a full clip is there? xx
 
Chalk doesn't really work as he is coloured and fluff gets to like 2 inches long on his sides and sticks out so still goes wonky!
 
As Rosiie said, clip him a couple of weeks. It's sunlight that causes the coat to grow thicker, not warmth, therefore a rug would help to stop him fluffing up, but would not cause him to stop growing as thick a coat. I would give him a blanket clip mid-september. And use one of those metal de-hairer things, also used as sweat scrapers, jaggered on one side and straight on the other in a tear drop shape. Do wonders for hairy beasts!
 
I always use a saddle soap bar to mark the lines when I clip.

I get an extra pair of hands and use a piece of string and run the wet saddle soap bar along the line. As long as horse is standing square you get a lovely straight line.

With some of the clips I see when I'm out at shows in the winter, I wouldn't worry about a fluffy line.
