Hi all

After a bout of ill health this year i am still building Ems weight back up. Due to the misreable weather she seems to be starting to feel the cold at night so I would like to pop a rug on her, the only problem is that due to her doing a remarkable impression of a sheep she gets sweaty during the day (currently sweaty even without a rug) and then her coat would be wet under the rug at night but as she lives out i cant just use one at night as she may have been rained on and would again have a wet coat.

So am planning on giving her a under neck and belly clip as thats where shes sweaty so she would be comfortable in a unfilled rug during the day, but does anybody find that their ned no longer lies down to sleep as theyve got a bare belly? Or that the skin there is generally cold to the touch?

Cheese and biscuits to everyone who read it all :)

I cant answer about the clip but most modern decent rugs are breathable so could in theory go on a damp horse with no problems

I find clipped horses warmer to the touch - there's less insulation to stop the heat escaping!

If she's sweaty standing out in the field without a rug, she'll be a lot happier if you clip - although I'm surprised she's going from too hot to the point of sweating during the day, to too cold at night. If you're not going anywhere public I suppose you could always leave most of the belly on and take off her neck and chest and if necessary a strip off each side, which would keep her at a more comfortable temperature and allow you to rug appropriately, while still keeping her tummy warm. She might look a bit odd, but getting her comfy is the main thing :D

We're giving our Belgian draft a bib clip this week, (already looking like a Woolley mammoth) I prefer to leave the belly on. That seems to help him because he also gets very warm during the day. Currently only wearing a rain sheet as he's living out and really likes the mud  but have found the new amigo xl perfect for his size and really great at leaving any excess moisture come out. Good luck :)

Thanks all

Shes generally just sweaty on the chest and a bit under the "armpits" so shall look at a bib clip then go from there if need be

Thanks again :)
