clipping questions

Frankie's owner decided to clip him out fully yesterday........(i think he should of had a blanket or a high chaser, but there we go

) anyway Frankie is very 'pink' under all his white hair, and she didnt leave any hair on his back......nada, nothing, just clipped it all away

now me being me i am slightly paranoid that i am going to hurt the skin on his back......seriously you can nearly see his withers poking out of his skin (he's not skinny, just sensitive!) and i was wondering if i should get a numnah or back pad to help distribute my weight more evenly? what do you all think? are there any brands that are particularly good?

plus, how cold does it half to be before you wear an exercise sheet for schooling? i wear one for hacking but not sure if he'll get too hot when schooling.........we are only doing basic stuff but again i am paranoid!

It sounds like she used something like an A2F blade when clipping. It's one that vets use to clip hair very close to the skin, leaves about 1mm againts around 2/3 mm that others leave. Just a normal numnah shouls be alright to use with him but make sure it is shaped, many are straight & would only fit a 'table'. Numnahs that are shaped correctly are Bartl (don't have to have sheepskin) & Nuumed, Cottage Craft High Wither. All these fit really well & will go right up into the saddle gullet & not pull across the withers.

Regarding exercise sheet, until there's a frost on the ground just exercise him as normal, warm him up slowly through the paces & just as important is to cool him down the same. Rug him up well also. His coat will start to grow back in in no time anyway. I hope this helps.

I always clipped Amy right out - made life so much easier. But she always wore a sheepskin numnah - so that's what I would advise.

As for the exercise blanket - well if it's cold pop one on - but make sure it's one that you can remove when riding after he's warmed up...
