Clipping Shetland Ponies

Jethro already has his winter coat and its so thick. Last year he was really sweaty some days, mainly on his chest and between his front legs and has already been sweating up a couple of times already.

So should I just leave him be, or perhaps give him a bib clip on his neck and chest? He is nearly 18 months old and aside from occasionaly being stabled, lives out in the field 24/7.

Our shettie is swealering in the field. Last winter we left him but this year he will be bib clipped until xmas then trace clipped because he'll be in and gets terribly hot on mild days.
 
A friend of mine clips her shetland, she takes him hunting (she doesnt ride him, her son does!) so he does get quite sweaty, however he is stabled at night. I suppose you could always put a rug on him if he gets too cold. Beware though, clipping a shetland takes ages, and I went through about two pairs of blades on my clippers!
 
I usually go over ponio with a shedding blade and a rubber curry to get rid of loose hair, then give him a good bath... and his coat (which is very thick) doesnt blunt the blades any more than a 'normal' pony.
 
We used cattle clippers on friend's shettie. Much tougher than horse ones if you have a friendly farmer to hand.

ive already clipped my mare with a trace clip 5 weeks ago and now her hairs growing back she needs clipping again! this will be the 3rd winter shes been clipped and shes 6 years old, out during the day and stabled in winter, out 24/7 at the mo until weather turns really rough!

I'll see if I can borrow my friends clippers and hope I dont end up getting it so wrong he needs a full clip.

He has a rug so if he gets cold after being clipped he can have that on.
