I received some advice that my MW cob may need to be clipped all year round. I clip him 3 times through winter but have never clipped through the summer and haven’t a clue how it would affect his coat or the pro’s and cons if any etc. He really struggled yesterday in the heat so just wondered what opinions are and if anyone on here does clip their hairy horse’s all year round.

When I had a hairy I clipped all year round. She was much more comfortable and after the first couple of days she didn't look clipped, just sleek and shiny. The only thing to watch is that they don't get sunburned. I'd recommend a fly rug for at least the first week so that their pink bits don't get sore.

We clip year round - every 6 weeks or so. He would be unmanageable without it.

There is no adverse impact on the coat in show terms. Show cobs can also be clipped year round. The thing with not clipping after Jan 1st is only relevant if you show unclipped in the summer (if then!)

When the clip is close you do need to watch out for any pink bits to be sure they don't get sunburn.

thanks everyone, i really wanted to aviod this as my clipping isnt the best and my lad is not a great fan of the clippers, he just about behaves himslef for a full clip, but if it's necessary and makes him comfier I will do it.

How long does the clip last, or do you make it a routine thing through the summer?

Just done my horse again, and I was shocked how much of a hairy belly she had. She is certainly feeling better for it now.

Here in Spain we clip all year round for the competition horses and when I was in the middle east they did there as well. Just keep them protected from the flies and the sun and be careful what flysprays you use. Every 6 wks as above.

My cob is clipped all year round (feather and mane all off too), his summer coat out does most winter coats. He is much more comfortable being clipped out, plus it looks smarter!

Edited to say, I keep him in a fly rug to stop him getting sun burnt, he is out 24/7. We gets clipped about every 4 weeks.
