Hello all,

I got a new horse in the summer, and being a cobby type he has got rather hairy over the last month or so, meaning that he gets very sweaty when I ride him.

I am looking into clipping him, but worried that he will get cold as his medium weight rug doesn't have a neck cover, and I don't believe there are any clips that leave the neck hairy are there?

Should I put the clip off until he goes into the heavy weight rug, which does have a neck cover?

Thank you :)

If he's a Cobby type then his breeding would mean he's quite tough and hardy and would be ok without a neck cover until it gets a bit colder?, if you were to clip him now- a trace clip or a chaser clip will leave hair on the neck still- depending on how high you need the clip to go.

I suppose it depends on what work he's in as to whether you clip now or later!.

Hi i was in the same situation as you as it is my first winter with my cob, i have just done a very low trace for now as it is still warm in the day but it is enough to make a difference while riding. He is carrying quite a thick coat and i didnt want to be rugging him up to much just yet. With the low trace ATM he has L/W on of a nite and while it is sunny in the day he goes naked. I will be be taking more off him in december when it is colder and he can cope with heavier rugs on. At this time of year a M/W on a cob is a bit to heavy.
Hope this helps :D

My coloured cob used to be clipped out all over and never had a neck cover, but was stabled at night. He was fine!
If you can't stable I would do a low trace until it gets colder, then maybe a higher trace as and when the thicker rug goes on.

Thank you for the advice guys! Really helpful.

At the moment he is in a lightweight rug at night and naked during the day.

I think I will do the clip at the weekend and do a very low trace clip to start with and may clip a bit more off when he goes into his medium weight/heavy weight later on in the year.

I wouldn't usually worry so much about a cobby type horse, but at 18 he is getting on a bit and although he keeps weight on him well and acts like an 8 year old when ridden, I would hate for him to be cold.

Thanks :)
