Got home last night and dooglie was not opening his eyes properly. There was no sign of trauma or redness at all, no ' gunk' like conjunctivatus ( sp ) and the only really pungent smell was from a bouquet of lilies so I chucked those out to see if they were the cause but he's still got the left one closed this am.

Any ideas. ??

If its still closed tonight am gonna go to vets as I don't mess with eyes.

Could be an inflammation of the eye, conjunctivitis, uveitis (the white bit of the eye), etc. There needn't necessarily be any gunk seeping from the eyes. He may have something in one/ both, or scratched the surface.

Your dog will be closing his eyes probably because they are painful as you would. Some drops into the eye will see whether there is any damage to the lining.
Some anti-inflams, pain killing drops will make him more comfprtable.

Don't leave the eyes any longer, problems are less the quicker they are seen to.

Yes take him to the vets today.

Right before Stella lost her eye to a head trauma, it was a little glassy, but there was definitely no sign of trauma or oozing. If it's uveitis, that can trigger secondary glaucoma. When she was involved in a car crash at Christmas (my poor, accident-prone babe) she also held one eye shut, and had lightly grazed the cornea on impact. Luckily that healed in a matter of days.

What I'm trying to say is don't wait for eye problems to heal by themselves--go to the vet's, as something minor can quickly turn serious!

Hope dooglie is better by now, but for the record, my Yorkshire Terrier had the same thing happen very suddenly one day last year. I rushed him to the vet as I thought he was dying! The vet gave me some drops, but it was only the next morning when I discovered what had almost certainly been the cause - my husband found a huge toad in the shower which is off our conservatory on the ground floor.

My dog very likely came across the toad in the conservatory and investigated (it would be very like him to do that!), and he either got squirted with defensive irritant, or just the irritant on the toad skin got transferred to his eyes.

Thankyou all for your replies,

CC i've not heard of pannus but i'll look it up

and BM I've yet to find a stray toad in the shower LOL but thats an interesting angle.

His eyes were better last night and the left one is just a bit watery this morning, I have booked us into the vet this evening to be on the safe side.
