Hello,
I am just looking to get some advice around the best riding boots for an adult beginner, I currently have ankle riding boots but my instructor mentioned I may benefit from having a longer boot (there are so many to choose from).

Also, any recommendations around comfortable riding tights/ leggings that have some grip?

Thank you 😊

I love my horseware riding tights. Some grip and so comfy. Also think half chaps best option. I like the tuffa suede ones. Again very comfy for me. Long boots maybe toggi Calgary? Love mine but only wear them in winter.

I had a lot of trouble finding long boots that were comfortable but for me the Rhinegold Nebraska boots are very easy to ride and walk in. My current favourite riding tights are from Amazon - BALEAF Thermal Riding Breeches and Avon Winter Riding Tights - full seat silicone grip and deep pockets for phone. I'm in fleece lined riding tights till July :D

I ride in Ariat zip up ankle boots and Tuffa half chaps.
Our RI advised people against getting long boots unless they could afford the best with a flexible ankle. She looked for free movement in the ankle and toes.
I bought myself lovely boots of which she approved but unfortunately I gained weight during Covid lock down and they no longer fit round the calf.

Thank you everyone.
I’m going to order some tuffa half chaps for my next lesson as I may not have time to visit a shop before then.
Size wise, I am a size 10, around 5’5 but have quite chunky calves. I’m unsure if to go for the medium, medium short, or large, large short. If there is any advice on what size may be best?

I really like the look of the Ariat zip boots, do you have the steel toe ones?
No I dont.
None of my boots have metal caps but the leather over the toe is hard both on my short zip up Ariats and on my Western boots (also Ariat).
At the time when I was buying my riding boots there had been warning publicity about the danger of metal toe caps cutting through ones toes if a horse stood with all its weight on ones foot. But I also learned about the need for hard toe caps because a girl groom at our RS was clipping a horse when she was wearing sandals and ended up in A&E when the horse stepped on her toes.

My boots are
Ariat short zip for summer,
Ariat terrain (like tell you ride) for Western or for walking in USA,
Mountain Horse short, warm lined lace up (with matching half chaps and larger stirrup irons) for winter weather,
and expensive soft tall boots for when I am slim enough to wear them. I dont ride in my Western boots but I did sometimes wear them when helping on the yard as they have hard toes but that is prior to 2008.

All my riding boots are 20 years old and I cant comment at all on current boots and versions.

My calves are 16.5 inches wide I go first large. Hope that helps. Don’t like tight things but they are stretchy.

If you have a tack shop anywhere near, your best is to go and try some chaps. The sizing can differ between brands, and you can see which tightness you feel most comfortable with.

Have you used Vinted before? Often some bargains to be had of lightly used boots. Something like the Toggi Calgary could be a good choice, as they’re not too structured or formal. Also come in regular or wide. I see lots on Vinted :)

Viovet have some pretty cheap riding tights in their sale at the moment and agree with above get some half chaps. I have long bouts but far prefer my ariat short boots and chaps over.
