Would you expect an older 23 yr old pony to have some cloudiness in his eyes (I guess possibly senile cataracts?) and how much would this affect his eyesight? He shows some hesitation jumping (albeit 1ft 6 max) and will often run out rather than do a nasty naughty stop if he doesnt feel confident and will often suddenly spook at shadows on the ground. I get the feeling he is starting to lose his eyesight ...

Tis such a shame as he has been having great fun with my daughter this year and seems to have had a new lease of life due to feed, supplements and management but I think his body isnt keeping up and his retirement is going to come quicker than expected :-(

I had the same with an elderly mare I was loaning for a little while. Generally she was foot perfect when hacking with others but alot more spooky on her own, think she relied on the others to let her know if something scary was around. Unfortunately she retires due to arthritis and although she must be almost blind she's still enjoying her time in the field and the occasional plod out with her owner.

Sorry to hear this has come when your daughter is having such a great time with him:)
