Have any of you guys had any experience of clover as an allergen for horses?

We've had two horses in our yard with a cough recently, one was a bit snotty the other wasn't. No temperature, both horses in full work and competing and no other outward signs.

First horse started coughing about two weeks before the first, vet gave antibiotics and ventipulmin and advised two weeks off work and was pretty certain clover wouldn't have caused it.

Second horse, different vet but same practice said definitely an allergy so only gave ventipulmin and said yes, could well be clover!

The horses are in adjoining fields but the only thing that seems different is that the coughing seems to have started after they moved into fields which this year are full of clover.

The first horse is relatively new to the yard so hasn't been in the fields before but the second horse has but last year when he was in it there wasn't any clover - hence our suspicions.

I know a horse or human can potentially become allergic to something that previously hasn't been a problem but wondered if anyone had any experience/thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Jo
