clumsy horses?

My big one is clumsy, for three reasons;

a) He's a nervy thing and always too busy looking/spooking at stuff to concentrate on where he's going.

b) He has spavins and is stiff.

c) He is built like a tank and hasn't much sense of personal space!

I find that steel toecaps do the trick :p And when he was still in work I wouldn't have taken him on very steep tracks or jumped anything solid!

Does yours stumble a lot? May be worth talking to your farrier!

Yeah, shes a diagnosed wobbler :/

Ive had her turned away for 6 months and, unbelievably (and i dont want to say it and jinx it) she seems to be recovering :)

Its very rare that they get better but luckily for my little baby, she had age on her side and it was only very very mild.

The vet told me that after about 6 months, i would know whether shes getting better or worse. And although still clumsy, there have been little things, like her putting on weight. Ive had her over a year and never once saw her lay down or roll. Ive seen her roll like 6 times in the past 2 weeks. I free lunged yesterday and she didnt trip once. Infact she looked pretty sound.

So fingers crossed its looking up. Im not going to be riding again for at least another year, i want to give her plenty of time for nture to work its magic, but i just wondered if there were other people out there on horses that stumble or whether they dont ride them!

I dont think shell ever be good to ride a dressage test, but i have my boy for that and if i can one day go for a canter on her across a field i would be the happiest proudest person on this planet :)

My boy used to trip a lot and be quite clumsy as a youngster, which I found quite frightening!!

However, now 2 years on we are fine, some thoughts ...

How old is your horse - if I look at my horse aged 6 now he is so much more 'together' in confirmation than at 4. If your horse is young it could be that bits are still growing and in time he will be able to balance himself.

What type is your horse - mine is a light cob. I have had to relearn to ride really well to ensure I know how to keep the horse off its forehand. In the long run this has been a really beneficial thing to do!!

Shoes - I have now taken his shoes off and have found he is much more aware of his feet. Long term I would like to put them back, but I plan to leave them off for long enough for him to really understand what his feet are doing.

Hope this helps!
