Im worried about one of our ponies joints, particularly in her front legs. It looks as if her knees lock sometimes when walking so they kind of clunk forwards instead of moving smoothly. She occasionally drags her toes slightly or trips. Most of the time she is fine but there are days that is more noticeable than others. .
She was vetted before purchase 7 months ago and didnt do brilliantly on the flexion tests (particularly hind legs) and the vet said that her back was very stiff but otherwise she was passed as being OK for the sort of work we wanted her for (light hacking with the kids). Slight toe clipping was put down to her hooves being a bit long at the time of the vetting.
Yesterday on first being released into the field (after a 5 min walk to get there) she suddenly went completely lame on her off-fore for a minute then recovered enough to gallop around kicking and bucking with her companion. She seemed more cautious than usual and putting less weight on that leg when possible. No heat or swelling. Today she was not obviously lame but I think her knee was more clunky than usual.
Any ideas?
Im thinking about asking for x-rays though not sure how many and which other joints to look at.
