hi , I have the vet coming in the morning but wondered if any one had any idea what this could be , i have 5 horses all live out 24/7 , i notice today that the mule was walking slowly and a little odd in front , i have gone in the field and she has puss/blood coming out of what looks like an absess between her front legs and chest area , prodding about further i notice she has 4 or 5 of these , its hard to tell as they are all very close and she is very hairy some of these lumps are 4inchs long and rock hard , the one that has popped i can squeeze puss out of i havent tryed with the others , the vet was due to come this evening as i rang them as soon as i found them but she got called to a major emergancy and i have no outdoor lights so she said she would come tomorrow morning . she has brambles in the field and there isnt alot of grass so she may well have got a few thorns in there but i cant get basterd strangles out my head , please someone tell me im being stupid and couldnt be that !
any ideas ??

I would probably try to isolate her and ensure you are 'doing' her last, i.e going home and showering after contact with her, if at all possible although if infectious it's likely ti will already have spread.
Could be a localised thing of course.
Are the others showing any symptoms?

thanks for the reply , she is the only one with these lumps , and a couple of weeks ago she had a really swollen shoulder , i thought she had slipped when playing in the mud so gave her bute and she came sound and the swelling went , could it be something to do with it ?, i am in a real awkward position as all 5 of them live on the same field and her and my mare are inseprable , the mule was put in my field when she was a foal and has been with my mare for 4 /5 years now as the mare is retired they have never been apart so i have had to leave them both together,.

I wouldn't worry about ******* strangles hun. You'd have seen more symptoms. She could have been double barreled in the chest which could cause haematomas. They can be pretty dramatic sometimes. I wouldn't poke or prod the remaining lumps - you could drive infected muck back into the tissues. Wait for the vet x
