This is a thread aimed at those who own the nice big heavy clydesdales!

I have a question on feed, what do you feed? How much? Any supplements/if so what are they? Anything in particular for helping joint and bone growth/develpment?

I have a youngster and am intrigued to see what you feed yours and if you feel there are any benefits.

I fed grow and win for the first year or so, then mare and youngstock till she was 3. she is now fed hi-fi, grass nuts and pink powder over the winter, with ad lib hay and haylage. shes out in the summer 24/7, and gets nothing but grass and carrots and apples. shes 16.2-17hh, and not hugely built. shes more like a traditional working horse than a show type.
ETA speedi beet in winter also!

Hi,

For my chunky 17.1 I feed:

Winter - Hifi, fibre nuts & small amount of bran & beet with ad-lib hay, probably get through 3 big round bales a month. Also gave some redigrass as he got bored of hay!

Summer - out 24/7 but fed Hifi, fibre nuts and bran.

He isn't only any supplements but I add oil to winter feed and in summer if we have done a long ride or he is very sweaty, I add electrolytes to his feed.

He also has apples, swede and carrots whenever I get them.

Thanks guys, it's nice to find out what others are on.

I was more concerned about joints and anything specific that's great for joint growth and development.[/QUOTe

I think if you are just careful to make sure you feed the right quantity for size, and feed a specific mix for a youngster, you cant go far wrong. I never fed supplements to mine until 2 winters ago, and pink powder is a general supplement. :)
