Who owns a Clydesdale? How do you find their size/temperament and also monthly costs?

Also, if you do own one, please do post photos so we can all have a looksie:D

My friend has one who's gorgeous, though sadly I haven't met him as he lives in the homeland and I'm stuck down here  I'd love a Clydie or a Cx if I had space!

There are some gorgeous ones on the forum... *sits down to await photos* :D

Me!! Currently have a Clydie x TB, beautiful boy :D Have had that cross before and also a pure clydie. They're very versatile, done affil DR, unafil ODE plus my pure clydie was a brilliant hunter!

They have gorgeous temperaments and are very good doers, so not mega expensive to keep, even when big, my lad is 17' 1".

Have never been able to post pics or would overdose on showing you!

I used to have a Clydesdale years ago. I had her for 14 years and she was the bees knees. We got laughed at when I took her to a local show, they stopped laughing when we won the absolute beginners jumping (beating lots of posh tb types which kept on running out and being idiots, my girl just tootled round popping everything!). She produced a big surprise in the way of a colt foal 6 months after I got her, kept him for 6 years then had to sell when I got pregnant.
I had to have her PTS when she was about 22 due to lots of reasons, I was heartbroken then and would do anything for another like her. Unfortunately clydesdale types are hard to come by:(

Have a soft spot for clydies my avatar pic is a lovely girl clydie x tb.

I was exercising a full clydie for a friend which didn't work out but he was a lovely horse on the ground we just didn't click ridden wise. He wasn't an amazingly good doer but was young and still growing and he could be quite sensitive he loved a cuddle though:p

You can't tell us about your lovely beast and not post photos...

If you have a photobucket account, you can upload them there, and then copy the IMG code (the 4th link offered when you hover over a photo).

Or if they're on facebook, just right click and select "copy image location". Then click on the Insert Image icon on the reply page on here (it's a little icon just above the text box which looks like mountains/sky) and then paste the image link into the reply box...

mines a clydie x, 16h amazing temperament, brilliant to hack alone etc, loves to jump and very cheap to run - never fed him anything other than hay! Love him to bits he's my perfect horse :)

We started out with Cairo. He had one eye, was a super all rounder - did well at XC, SJ and dressage at local level. Super hack, would go out with three kids riding him on our huge western saddle and was the nearest thing to 100% safe you could ask for. True gentlemen, had to be pts at 22 due to liver failure. Did have eye cancer and had to be treated every three years at about £2,500 but we always managed to find the money. A true member of the family and four years on still sadly missed.

We now have Farra, bought her as a four year old and she is now eight. Again a true all rounder, loves to jump and is doing very well at coloured and heavy horse showing. Again super temperament, kids can ride her but she is also no plod and very light to and responsive to ride.

Cairo was a good old fashioned type, whereas Farra is a more flashy show type as can be seen from their heads - I had this painting done for my hubby for Christmas - both his clydes together which he said is the best present he has ever had.

Costs - ours don't wear shoes so £29 for a trim every 8 weeks. Feed - about the same as my 14.3 gypsy cob apart from a bit more hay. A lot cheaper to feed than my TBs. Rugs - I use 6'9 - 7' (both of them are the same height at just over 16.2. Bridles - extra full and saddles are wide fitting - they are not as wide as my gypsy cobs. Boots - they need XL and again are not as heavy boned as the gypsy cobs.

Clydes are addictive and probably the best of the heavies to ride as they are longer in the leg and lighter in build. They also have the most active movement. Also are super when crossed with TBs as SJ and hunters as Clydes do have a very powerful jump.

One thing, they are not great weight carriers. The heavy horse is bred to pull not bear. I would not put more than 15 - 16 stone on either of our clydes. Some people think they should be able to carry 19 - 20 stone but this is not correct - you would be better with a thick boned, short backed heavy weight cob for that.

We have Jack, who is 11 and 16hh. He is passported as Clydesdale but we think he's got some Welsh D in him as he can have a high knee action (if he can be bothered!)

He has a few issues on the ground, fear of confined spaces, rushing through narrow door/gateways and is terrified of rugs - although he does wear one, but I have to put it on or take it off him very slowly, gently and with lots of encouragement. He also has a fear of lines and straps around his rear end so he doesn't long-line or wear a training aid. Oh and he doesn't jump. The Welsh attitude comes out if I ask him to walk over a pole.

All that said, when you climb aboard, he assumes an air of responsibility and is the safest hack. He'll plod along all day but enjoys the occasional blast too.

It's taken a year for us to find our balance but I love him to pieces. He was totally misunderstood when he arrived and very overweight, but he's gorgeous now. And the best bit is that my OH loves him too so he's found a renewed interest in riding.

Thank you, JFTD. I feel soooo incredibly dumb!!! I got as far as above, but I still can't seem to get the photos on here.

BTW, I LOVE your Highland!

Forgot to say, Jack is no more expensive than the TB I had before him. Yes, he eats a little more than the average horse, but not excessively so. Because he's only 16hh he wears "full" sized tack. His shoes are a size 6 which is one size down from the largest ready-made shoes that my farrier carries. He wears them on his fronts only and goes around 7 weeks on average in between shoeings.

Oh! Quelle surprise!!!!! I thought only the code would show up, not the pix. Sorry they are so enormous!

Thunder was the most friendly, inquisitive, agreeable soul. The photo with the baby was when one of my vets came to our farm with his under 2 year old son. Baby and Thunder were equally smitten with each other. Thunder loved everything, except plastic rubbish bags.
He groomed our sheep (and anything with four legs that would stand still long enough); stole sandwiches, if he could; taught my completely unhorsey husband to enjoy equine company; ground (grinded?) his teeth when being groomed; loved the company of people, as well as all other equines he might encounter, including our donkeys, who, initially terrified him. Sadly, the donkeys never reciprocated his offer of friendship. Bottom line, Thunder was one of the nicest people in the world. We lost him to colic in 2010.

Mine's a Clydesdale x, 14.1 but thinks she's 17.1, and has given both me and my small daughter so much fun. Here she is pretending to be a gymkhana pony, she jumps as well!

They are indeed hard to come by! My lad was diagnosed with arthritis in his coffin joints 3 yrs ago, so DR, schooling and jumping came to a halt :( I'm still managing to keep him hacking sound, but tried for 2 yrs to find another like him, but no joy.

Theresa, that painting is absolutely stunning!

Some beautiful piccies here, love them all!

Rutland, thanks :) You need enormous pics for enormous horses ;) I LOVE that first photo - too cute! He sounds like such a character too - lucky you to have had him in your life :)

Loving all the photos btw! Especially Old Bat's flying mini-Clyde!

I am loving these photos!! :D

OH wants a Clydie, and of course I wouldn't say no! Finances prevent it at the moment but I'm sure we'll get one one day :D
