I noticed lately that my older gsd's coat has gone rather coarse and dry. He's always had a lovely shiny thick coat but the most recent moult has seen a change.

I have bathed him (no change) and I brush him regularly (about once a week). Skin quality is ok, no real dander unless I really go for it with the brush. It just doesn't look or feel like it did 6 months ago.

I recall my previous gsd going through a similar change as he got to the senior years: is that likely to be the case for this lad? He's 8 in October but is very fit and healthy, entire. no changes to his feed or anything like that. Anything I can feed or put on to improve coat quality?

OlderGSD,older greyhound...I'd have a read at levrier's post as there are a lot of good ideas there....your dog probably needs a boost....lecithin,oils which contain omega 3 and 6( either in the diet or in supplemental form), baths for a dry skin( oatmeal shampoo etc), a regular deep brush and comb (daily)to remove the dead coat.

Agree with this - it is early days for Islay still but I am determined to get her coat back to the glossy black shiny coat she used to have :)
