Do coats usually get a bit 'rubbish' when a bitch is in heat?

Whilst she does need a trim, Daisy's seems to have lost its lusture.

Hormones can do all sorts of weird and wonderful things to the coat.

Also, what age is she? If she's between say 10 months and 2 years, she may very well be going through a coat change in which case the coat is an absolute NIGHTMARE to keep knot free.

her coat may very well be starting to change. I feel your pain, my poodle bitch pup is 10 months old, but she has MUCH longer hair.
