Does anyone know of any good cob breeders in the North of England, I’m a first time buyer and struggling to find somewhere to buy one?

If you're a first time buyer, I wouldn't be buying a youngster from a breeder. I'd be looking at an older, more established horse who is safe and sane (all first time horse ownership is scary and overwhelming, let alone trying to teach basics to a green horse!). Then, perhaps a youngster as a second horse further down the line. Apologies if I have the wrong end of the stick...

Thanks for the advice. I’ll definitely look for an older horse I just don’t know where to buy one.

As HM said, an older been there, done it horse would probably be a better option for a first horse than a youngster. Ask around within your horsey friends and connections. They may know of someone selling just the type of horse you're looking for and recommendation can be the safest way to find the one you're looking for. There are lots of websites to start looking at - Horsemart and Horsequest are just 2 of them. If you see one you like the look of, make enquiries and be sure you take someone experienced with you, maybe your instructor or an experienced friend. Good luck and keep us posted as to how you get on.

What height are you looking for and whats your budget? A little scrap of a colt bred by travellers will cost you next to nothing. A 15hh polite, sensible 8 to 12yr old with nice markings and reasonable conformation will be considerably more.

If your after a cob why not look at a rescue from a charity such as world horse welfare? They may have something suitable and if it is your first horse should ensure you are carefully matched up with the right horse. A wanted advert or word of mouth can also be useful for turning up horses.

I don’t particularly have a budget but I’m quite tall so I’m look for a horse I’m not going to swamp.

Ah. Thank you. I’ll definitely check out some charities.

How tall is quite tall?

No budget should make things easier, there are a number of good cob dealers but most sell them very quickly

There are lots of cob dealers, and lots I wouldn't touch with a ten foot barge pole. The ones I would consider would be Trinas cobs, I personally wouldn't use her but she does have a good rep.

Daniella Ranaldino has a some quite smart hairy cobs on occasion and would source you something given your requirements and budget and would be my preference if I wanted that type.

MTF horses get the more ID show cob type if that's what your looking for.

It depends where you are though. Daniella is Coventry ish I think and MTF is the NE. I happen to know of those 2 having lived in both areas. I'm sure there will be others in other areas if you want to give us a rough location.

You need to decide what you want first before you do any serious shopping. And you need to define no budget. Does that mean 10k or a 100k?

Lilrider - there are quite a few Facebook groups for calling out bad dealers (Dodgy Horse Dealers and Sellers and various others). I would join those groups and ask around on there for reviews (good or bad) before you even start looking - some dealers will absolutely prey on first time buyers! Make sure you have good, independent advice (trusted friend/YO/instructor), and buy with your head not your heart!

Send us adverts too - HHO members are great at seeing what is not written in adverts, and deciphering what is written!

Thanks. I’ll look into those dealers. For budget I was just thinking I’ll find horses first and decide what’s best for my money later on

I think you need to at least have a ballpark maximum figure in mind. You don’t need to spend it but it’s useful to know how high you can go for perfect.

It also helps people to direct you to the right dealers
