My cob shire cross has been out on loan, but she's just come back because she started head shaking quite violently. I was really surprised because she's 16 now and has spent most of her ridden life as a trek horse for novice riders. I double checked her teeth and saddle, but sure enough, there it was... violent head shaking, particularly in trot and canter. Then I noticed something. She had had the base of her mane shaved so it didn't rub on the saddle. When I hover my hand over this area she violently shakes her head and twitches through the whole of her shoulders. So I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that this is the problem. Has anyone had any experience of this? Is there anything I can do to encourage the growth of her mane back and reduce the sensitivity?
