Hii i don't know if i can ask this here so sorry if so but was wondering how much is a relistic price for a nice older been there done that cob.

I am looking at buying my first horse soon and am trying to find out average prices, ads go from 900 to 4000 and i really don't know what i am looking at.

I will have help finding the right one i just wanted a guideline here please if anyone can say.

Thnks
Ps i want a hack/schooling horse but no jumping plus 15 hands above.

Having currently got a fantastic younger, bigger cob up for sale at the moment at the top end of that scale, I'd say 4k would be about right. Cobs and top end competition horses are the only things that are retaining their money.

I think 3000 would be reasonable from what I have seen, you might be able to make an offer for 2500 but they certainly do seem to be retaining their value as people put a price on safety, so a real good family allrounder that is bombproof etc could get 5000 easily.

I think the bigger ones especially fetch more money so if just 15hh you might find a bargain :-) also depends if you are looking to do shows etc.

Having considered selling my tri-coloured 14.3hh cob recently I did some research and I would say the average price for a safe all-rounder of a decent age (mine is 12) having done a bit of this and that (le-trec / sponsored rides / showing / jumping etc etc) hacks alone / in company would be around £3,000 and yes I am afraid possibly up to £5k!

I was going to ask for about £3300-3500 inc tack and if no-one was prepared to pay that for a wonderful horse then he would stay (as he now is doing because I am not ready to part with him).

He has retained his value, I bought him in 2007 and he has done so much more than when I bought him including inc. being schooled for dressage so....cobs are expensive!!!

A friend of mine did pick up a school master thoroughbred type for £300 though so you can find "alternatives" - however she sold her on as she was not safe to hack alone so I guess the moral of the story is "you get what you pay for".......try try and try the one you might buy though, dont be rushed, I saw so many "safe cobs" when looking for mine that when I delved had not been ridden for years and went mad once out!

Mine was vetted on an A road believe it or not and lived by the M25 for some years!

Good luck and keep us posted, pics too please :) Exciting times ahead!

I've seen a couple of nice ones around the 2K mark but that aren't a finished product

Have a look on the Horse Gossip for sale section

I'm a bit in love with a lovely chap on there called Mark, a really super looking sweet cob, if I was riding I would have bought him in a heartbeat!

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Iam in bedfordshire buy would be willing to travel for the right one!

Mandwhy, thts just the sort of chunk i want!

Will be very careful trying out, vetting etc i want as a easy ride as possible because its my first and i have only just got my confidence back riding this year from a nasty fall around 5 years ago now!

I have seen so many dealer websites coming up on horsemart but am not sure of them. Maybe someone could pm me of your experiences?

I was hoping the average price would be around 2500 - 3000 but would pay more for safety etc.

Thnks again for the replies, and yes exciting times ahead!!! :D

Mark is in Bedfordshire ;)

Ad on the HG site user name fourwhites. The cob is young but looks a wonderfully genuine sort from a good home (I have nothing to do with him just keep going back to the ad to look at it!)
