Hi. I'm currently riding my cob in a Wilkie. I can jump him in it and also produce some decent flatwork. I'm planning our first showing outing, Im thinking Ridden Cob and Novice Working Hunter classes. From an asthetics point of view I would rather use a Pelham and double reins, however what are your views on using a Wilkie please? I've been told they were specifically designed for cobs? Does that make them acceptable/favourable for showing?

At local level you will be fine. The higher up the levels you go you will be better schooling him into 2 reins.

Wilkies are like marmite. Some judges love them, others hate them. They are a gag in all but name but they seem to be a favourite with childrens lead rein and first ridden ponies. A lot of people are using them as the bridoon part of their doubles too these days which is just totally and utterly wrong.

I'm in the 'hate camp', but only when people are convinced they are using a nice snaffle. Like EKW has said, they are essentially a gag.

Just check the rules on novices classes at local shows, near me quite a few rightly don't class Wilkies as snaffles and so can't be used in novice classes.
