Hi All,

I am about to buy a 15hh, chestnut gelding with flaxen mane and tail. He has full mane and feathers and looks gorgeous (in my opinion :-)). I want to do different things with him such as RC, Trec, hacks etc. Was also thinking of showing him, if I can, just for fun because I think he is handsome.:D

I now wonder, is it possible to show him with mane and feathers? If I can, in what class(es ) can I show him in? I am thinking mainly of ridden classes.

If I have to hog him, in what classes could I show him then?

He only has a pet passport and no known breeding.

Can I show him on local shows? And what does that mean? How do I find them? In what class(es)?

Can I show on any other level? And if I can, how do I find those shows?

I have checked with Traditional Cob Association and he is not the right type for them to register. Do not know why exactly but that was what they said.

As you probably understand I know nothing about the show world and I find it tricky to find out information via the show societies.

If anybody could help me to get clarity in this, I will be delighted.

Many thanks in advance.

Without a photo it is hard to tell, but..

Is he welsh (sound like it with the colouring)? If so you could show him locally as a large mountain and moorland.

If not a welsh type, you could show him as a ridden cob with feathers and mane - local cob classes tend to have a mix of hairies and hogged. Hogging is quite a big step and if not a 'true' cob may not be appropriate.

If he can pop a jump you could also enter Riding club classes, which is judged more on suitablility to do a 'bit of everything', rather than looks.

If he is a good enough jumper local level working hunter classes are fun too, where you would be required to jump a course of rustic jumps, then do the showing side too.

There are also 'novelty' classes as some local show with classes such as 'Handsomest gelding'.

If he is un registered, it is unlikely you could show him at a higher level, but somone else may be able to advise better on this aspect.

In terms of finding local shows, first check with your local RC. Also the 'Riding Diary' website is very useful for finding out what is going on in your area, from shows to fun rides etc.

Hope that helps and have fun!

Sidney,
Thank you very much. It helped a lot. I will be looking forward to our local shows. Maybe start in Mountain and Moorland and take it from there. I am glad to hear that he doesn't have to be hogged to be shown. I love his feathers and mane.
