Hi

I have a traditional cob who suffers from white scabby skin behind his knee (only one leg) I have been putting pig oil and sulphur on his legs and it does seem to help although the dry skin comes back quite quickly. Anyone have any ideas or advice?

I've been led to believe that such scabs are due to mites. My boy gets them and regular oiling seems to be the best thing for the scabs along with a regular washing in hibiscrub and warm water to loosen them.

sulphur can also be mixed with sudocream, which is quite good and worth a try.

*vanner* -grease and mites are different conditions.

I asked my vet about the scabs as I wasn't sure how I should be treating them - she said they were due to the mites.

I'd be willing to try anything to get rid for good so am open to anyones ideas.

Think its called Mallanders or sallanders (sp?) and MJ gets it - no nasties on him, we've checked.
I hibbiscrub once or twice a week, and then use E45 - it works for him.
Theres also a pink ointment called Protection Plus, I think in a blue and yellow tub, and thats good too.

I use utter cream as well and its v v good!

Vanner would you mind telling me where you got your mane bag from. I have a traditional and have been thinking about getting one of these for the winter. Do you turn him out with them on?

Thank you.

Dommy - yes I do turn him out in his mane bags stops the wind knotting his mane.

Here's two ways of getting hold of some:

Thanks so much for all your help :). Nice to know others are fighting the same battle with the dreaded scabby leg lol.

Mallanders is behind the front knees, Sallanders is in front of the hock on the hind legs...i think!!
Melly has mallanders and also scurfy coronet bands, Ive tried everything inc pig oil and sulphur, and nothing keeps it away permenantly.... Pig oil and sulphur is the best Ive found tho! Other than clipping her legs out that is!
