I have a 15m traditional feathered cob gelding. He's going through a big growth spurt at the mo (at measuring 3 weeks ago his bum was THREE inches higher than his withers!!). Both my boys (I have a 15yo TB too) have been allowed access into my top field today and Albi (cob) has not stopped eating!!! :D I've had full grown cobs before so I know how they can gain weight on fresh air so today has made me think about where the line is for youngsters of this type? On the one hand, I naturally want to provide enough nutrition and sustainance for Albi to grow well, but on the other I don't want him becoming overweight and putting a strain on his developing joints. I'm not too worried about him pigging-out at this time of year, tbh, because the grass will reduce with oncoming winter, but come the spring it will be a different story. He also gets a small Speedibeet and Alfa-A Oil feed daily with vit/min supplement.

Am I worrying necessarily? Is it just a case of keeping a close eye on him but what do I do in spring if he starts to looks a bit podgy? What are your experiences please?
