We had a quiet meet in our village today, so decided to take him for his first morning's proper outing out with the hunt.
We went for a short introduction out cubbing at the newcomers meet back in October, but didn't really stick around for long, only tagged along through 2 or 3 fields in walk mostly then came back as we missed the meet so decided to just tag along [originally had gone just to stand around at the meet to see hounds etc]. Good as gold then, though did get excited when we caught up with the hounds finally [which was just as we were heading home on our own], but we hadn't seen the hounds at all till that point and then went home when we did see them for a short stint.
Anyway, long story short. Behaved like a little old pro. He is entire still, and although never colt-ish and normally well behaved, I wasn't quite sure what he'd make of hunting. He was however, a complete angel. We stood at the meet with no fidgeting, fine with hounds running round him, no interest in what the other horses were doing at all....even if one was bouncing along or fidgeting or overtook him, didn't change his attitude whatsoever.
I decided to stay at the back, as it was very boggy out so mostly just walked and trotted our way through - though did have a few nice open canters on a couple of hills. I thought best for us to tuck in at the back so we helped gate shutters when we could, as he was happy to wait patiently and easier for me to get on and off on a few tricky gates with him being so short!
So yes, super pleased and amazed at him. He's a level headed chap most times, but worries a bit with other horses as he is bottom of the pecking order with anything virtually and has stuck with him a bit so he just likes to keep himself out the way. We spent the day loose on the reins and mostly plodded along on the buckle and left him to it to sort his feet out over the ground as it was rather poached and boggy! Went through a stream or two too.
