Hi, I've got a 16hh, very heavy set (poss shire x) hairy cob with legs like telegraph poles! We have never used boots for anything with him, but I'm plannin on takin him on a farm ride and wondered whether he would need any protective boots (eventing boots / tendon boots) ?? We won't be jumping much and only smaller fences (2'6" max) but they will be solid like logs etc. What do ppl think? Does he need them? Thanks x

IMO, if he's not used to wearing them, a farm ride is not the time to try them out! BUT, if he's not done much jumping of solid fences then they're not a bad idea, but do get him used to wearing them before you go. an eventing boot (don't need to be expensive) is prob best option as it would provide a bit of protection all round.

Thanks for that, I just bought some lovely boots for my other coblet who is out of work at the moment so will try those for size tonight and if they fit will have a ride in them and see how it goes - but he better not lose them half way round!!! other coblet will be most unimpressed if half his birthday present gets left at somerford!

Hmm, I think I agree with the first post, if he's not used to it, then its not necessarily the right time to try them out. However, I will say something pretty contentious in that I dont use boots at all on my cob. He;s a 14.3hh mw and is clipped and before I bought him he was pretty neglected and had mud fever sores all up his front legs which have left white scabs and sometimes crusty lumps underneath which itch him. He wont wear travel boots, or even a pair of light schooling boots - he tries to bite them off. He's been hunting numerous times without boots, also been xc schooling with me and mini tx and to PC camp and done some PC ode events without them on. He's happy, we've had no issues and his legs are fine.

Hi there,

I don't put boots on any of my cobs either. They have full feathers and are bare foot.

I did try a pair of pull on overeach boots once (because everyone else was) and I had to cut them off of him because they wouldn't come off! His feet were too big and his feathers too full.

Have fun on your ride :)

I wouldn't I find, particularly for fun rides that I get more problems from sweating under boots than if I just leave them off completely. He's ok to wear them for the duration of an xc round but not not much longer and he's welsh so not that fluffy really!

I wouldn't, especially if he isn't used to them and has lots of bone and feathers anyway. He sounds a bit more heavy set than our hunters and they hunt all day (last time they went for 30 miles!) over all terrain and jumps without boots on. Obviously they are used to going over solid jumps, but as it is only a fun ride and you said you won't be jumping much then personally I would leave him. Have fun!

So you joined at last!! Am very excited for Sunday, is mummy coming too, then we can get some piccies?

The PE boots you got are breathable, so he should'nt get too sweaty under them!

Hi lisa!!!

Hmmmm im not sure now! Am thinkin its a valid point re the hunters - they go all day with no boots. I think I might just let simon be simon and do his thing! Beside he looks more sexy with all his feather flowing!! Dunno bout mummy sue, will ask her!
