Hi, I got my vet to give my cob a dectomax injection. He had 2, two weeks apart in late september and hasnt stamped /scratched since! Vet said to repeat in march if they came back - but no signs yet.x
our cob has had them for years and we have tried absolutely everything on him including injections from the vets without any luck until we tried Frontline this year and within a matter of days he had stopped stamping, we just repeat it now and again to make sure we keep them away
Once you have got on top of them with Frontline or Dectomax it's best to get in the habit of using pig oil & sulphur to keep them at bay. Theresa_F has a really good pm youcould ask her for.
Whatever you treat them with, remember that you have to repeat it after 10 days because the eggs are protected from products that kill the adults. If you don't repeat after 10 days, the hatching eggs will simply re-infest your horse. Remember too that the mites can drop off into bedding and be on grooming kit so be ruthless in zapping them. Frontline you have to rub deep down into the hair until it's on the skin.
Frontline spray - repeat every ten days for three treatments. Then use pig oil and sulphur in the wet months and just sulphur in the dry months every few weeks.
If you want a very long and details PM about keeping hairy horses legs in good health and with show condition hair, PM me and I will send it to you.
One thing - you must treat the legs regularly all year round or the mites will return. Welcome to a life of pig oil and sulphur
Seriously, once you get the knack ten minutes every other week is all it takes to keep on top of things.
