Cobs that do dressage!

Dan (in my signature) is a Welsh Cob and he is 20 now, but in the last 5yrs since I've had him he has:
competed up to Medium (well, we managed 1 Medium anyway!) and got 64%
4th at the Petplan Area festival finals at the BD Winter Champs out of 29, after coming 3rd out of god knows how many at the area festivals with 70% from Linda Whetstone (best day of my life!)
got 81 points in 3yrs of on-off competing fitting in around uni
done the UKChasers National Finals twice before we affiliated
won the riding club area dressage to music qualifier 2yrs running and been to the Nationals
won the london&south east open dressage to music and costume classes
consistently over 60% at prelim to elem and almost always in the placings, even at affil.
got a 9 for his trot at affiliated novice!
done all that despite me only schooling him once a fornight due to uni

and that's not me bragging - that is simply a wonderful horse who i think the world of and will miss competing like you wouldn't believe.
 
oh yeah, and Derwen Rendezvous is a welsh cob and is at PSG and i know of one locally to me doing Advanced. There are often some in H&H doing up to Advanced and there is one in America doing grand prix. cobs rock!
 
theres lots of heavy type shire x sorts doing really well at the moment

and a cob that can move can MOVE. love the welsh action
 
My cob is going to go out and do some dressage over the winter. He is a show cob, not the hairy type!!! Lots of them do very well. A friend of mine has welsh cobs which she competes to a very high level with (not up on dressage terms sorry) but I know she has represented England with one of them!!
 
My wife has competed her welsh D affiliated dressage for the last 4 years.

She has.....
Over 200 BD points.
Qualified for regionals every year.
Now competing medium and won her first 2 weeks ago.
Working advanced medium and hope to move up early next year.
Out today to see if she can complete qualification for winter semi's.
This is on a pony (14.1) that was bought as a hack for less than 2k.

So yes, cobs can do dressage.

I also ride a very talented german warmblood, and he is wonderful, but when George (and I) get it right, there's not a feeling in the world like it!!

Oh he is lovely! So the consensus seems to be that COBS CAN DO DRESSAGE! Right now we need a post ‘Cobs that jump’!

Even though Sal_E would have every one of them fully clipped out, he, he!
 
i have a traditional cob who is not hairy but still has mane! she looks so much better without the hair and althou we only compete at prelim at the mo she still qualified and we went to wales showground for championships of great britain at the end of september! my friend also competed a cob and was told she could go to Prix St George. she was getting over 60 in elementraty when she stopped riding him! i would put a photo up but cant work this thing!
 
Jemima did very well at local level - and she had a tail to the ground, very full feathers and a mane past the elbow. I used to find it quite funny to hear the comments from the posh WB owners that she was first.

One comment I actually had was "nice tail" which did make me laugh. Some judges do not like hairy cobs, but others look at the movement and not the hair. Our old clydie frequently did a far better test than my WB mare but she scored more as she looked the type. I just avoided these judges as they were ignorant.

A cob can move really well and they are very trainable. I tended to put her mane into a running plait or just single long plaits - mainly as when jumping with all that mane and forelock we couldn't see where we were going.

Jemima is a true gypsy cob and a great all rounder - could jump up to 2'9 - 3 no problem, very agile and great round a XC course at 2'6 level - nice and steady and very brave and we did well at local showing.

Gypsy cobs will never be top league at XC, jumping or dressage, you do need a specialist type for that, but will try their hearts out and you can compete one day and then hack out in total safety the next which is what I love about them. For local level fun, you cannot beat them.

That is so true! Mine won her prelim class, had a 6 mile hack home (through some heavy traffic) and the following week came 3rd out of about 40 horses in a handy pony class...

They're the jack of all trades - masters of none!
 
Mine should manage elementry without too much trouble but there are a fair few who are medium and Advanced around here. I think section D's are pretty smart animals, lots have great rhythm and presence. I should add that mine is a light weight and boy can he jump as well!!

I have done some dressage with Benson...his first novice test he got 63.85%...he is actually pretty good at dressage...its me that bu**ers it up all the time by forgetting my test!!! Oops!!
