Yes, you have to 'outcob' them sometimes. But check your lorry or trailer to make sure that nothing's come loose etc that would make the journey scary/uncomfortable. Also has he got enough room? My hunting cob didn't really fit in an Ifor 505 but he was fine in a 510 and would put himself on the lorry given half a chance!
If all seems good you may have to rely on the element of surprise. Hitting cobs to make them do something is a waste of time - have you tried prickling his bottom with a broom or flicking water at him if he won't load? The broom trick worked every time with my friend's cob which was the biggest and stubbornest thing around!

mine is just the same the best traveller and loader you could wish for but on ocasional days she stops at the bottom of the ramp and needs a tap on the bottom then walks staight up and travels no problem
because she is a big girlie she does like lots of room to spread out

My daughters cob suddenly developed this stubborness last year at a show. He had always loaded with no fuss for the previous three years but on that day he wasn't going on the trailer and we were going home! The problem became worse as any pushing, lunge lines, brute force or threat of a whip sent him backwards. We eventually resorted to food bribes which was a big mistake but being a gutty cob it worked for a while but then he just expected a treat for every step he took into the trailer! It was so frustrating as he was clearly taking the p**s and used his considerable strength to get the better of us. I think (hope) we've cracked it now as we have been practicing again for the last few days. He put up a battle the first time (he was NOT having treats) and took to rearing slightly and sort of banging both front feet on the ramp before vearing off to the side. I did have to prod him with a stickto stop him jumping off the side of the ramp but he remembered that today and went straight on. Good luck with yours if he's not actually scared then you just have to keep at it

thanks for all your replys ironhorse my trailer serviced and he has the partition out it is a 505 I think he's just taking the P--s it do's make me laugh but not when I need to be somewhere in say 10 mins !!

Mine (section D cob) normally loads fine but recently we went to some showjumping at the same place we always go and as I was about to load him someone started herding sheep in the field next to us and there were people sweeping the yard the other way so he decided he'd rather watch what was going on around him rather than get on the trailer. He spent about 5 minutes fart arsing around blatantly having no intention of getting on so in the end I had to move the trailer to a boring part of the venue and he walked straight on.
I've found that my cob generally has to think that things were his idea and then he's cool with it

Lol, they are so annoying but far too loveable it is hard to get mad at them you just have to laugh. My big maxi has refused to load a couple of times but only coming home from places he 'loves'. He just plants his feet on the ground and just daydreams staring into the rolling hills and green countryside, ears pricked and he won't load until he has finished dreaming about galloping around/eating all the grass. We were coming home from a hunt a few years back and it was pouring with rain and at one point there were about 10 of us trying to get him on people were like smack him, get the whip and I was like noooo it will just go un noticed or he will bugger off persuing his dream with me attached to the end of the rope!! 99.9% of the time he will just trot up happily as anything.

They are funny things who spent most of their time making you laugh or cry!!

Hi Drummer, thats it 2 a T your cob looks like my boy but mines a bay ive showed him and he did very well but I just hunt him now twice a week its a lot easier !!! good luck.

I love that comment! Mine has very Welsh moments, he's either a 100% paragon of virtue or he's an absolute ****** (insert worst expletive you can think of) who reduces me to tears of rage and frustation, and sometimes he's lucky I don't have keys to oh's gun cabinet!
Why does he do it? Simply because he can!
