Springers are fab, mine knows that in the house he chills out but outside he can run around to his hearts content!!

Also springers can not return home from a walk or the yard clean its just not done!!

Don't go for a springer if you will be leaving it home all day as this is when the troubles start!

Sorry but not a cocker fan, neighbours have two, bark, bark, bark (even in the house at people) and they're over 7 months old and still piss in the house.

SS, nice dogs, easy to train but very hyper!!

SS - don't go ther eunless you are around all day and prepared to train them. Fantastic dogs if so.

cockers; my family has had three, one was fantastic in all ways - a golden one. The other two a bit mental and difficult to train though both boys from same litter so I reckon that had somehing to do with it.

Cockers better for less experienced owners I'd say and perhaps better house dogs than a SS maybe, particularly if not planning to work it.

Can't comment about barking though as my family live in middle of nowhere and I can't recall us noticing more barking than with the other dogs (collie and retriever)

But you have to think these owners have not bothered to train them! If they have there not very consistant lol! But with maggie if we hadnt trained her she would have been even more of a nutter then she is now so! And maggie (yeah i know border collie but on abotu training lol!) was taught from the day she was born to do her busines on newspaper and we put the newspaper nearer the door until it was out and she learnt to tel us when sh needed the loo so she wen out on the lead! So if the owners had have trained them they would be doing it outside within a couple of weeks of having them!

Crikey thats long but you get the jist lol, basicly its not in the breed to wee in the house!

Owners have trained them, the owners have my inuit pup who is 10 weeks old and going through the night without pee'ing. They have a rottie x who is a lovely dog and doesn't mess in the house.

As someone said, watch a demo at a game show, easy dogs - lab, harder dog, springer, a real challenge - cocker.

P.s did you see the joke in the soapbox about dogs and the lightbulb?

The cocker was - it doesn't matter that the light has gone out I can still pee on the carpet ---- or on similar lines to that. So it must be in the breed as they had GSD's and JRT's down to a tee!

Some may jump on me, but I think they are totally unsuitable as family pets IF they don't get enough exercise! They have wonderful temperaments, but absolutely thrive on lots of exercise. I think they're lovely dogs, and are fab with children if brought up with them properly etc...But I've found they just turn themselves inside out if they don't have something to do.

We have 5 working cockers and they are all fab dogs, when they are working they are always going but in the house they just curl up and go to sleep.
We used to have a springer spaniel, if you go for a traditional one they are heavier set and steadier, thats what we had. Its the modern springers that are nuts.
We also have a irish water spaniel which is a dude!!
I think as long as you do something with them they are fine, we had a few years back and everyone that bought one was made aware of the nature of cockers, they all went to active homes, either working or agility.
Ours were all very easy to house train, after a couple of puddles they realised it was to be done outside!!
Dont know if itll help, but we have a website, that my dad made with a bit of info on our various dogs!

We had a springer who we lost back in March she was a great lady, we got a 7mth springer from a rescue and she has been very hard work.

She`s great in the house and with my son but get outside and its like having a different dog. she is at the top of the working strain and is off just hunting, we have had loads of trouble with her running off and hunting. We have lessons with a local gundog trainer who has been great but it has cost us some money.

I would think very hard about a springer for a pet life. We decided to work towards her just coming back I know realise that we will work towards getting her out doing what she was breed for and hopefully will get out beating one day.

I have welsh sprnger and he's not mental at all! English do have a bit of a nerviuos energy but welsh are fare more placid and calm, he gets to good runs with the horses a day and just sleeps all day at home, and he's a wonderful loving dog. He comes to the pub with me a couple of times a week and is the local celebrity! My brother has an English and she's lovely too just a bit dim! Know a few with cockers and they do bark,l a lot, my mom wanted one before we got oscar but i said no due to the barking! As long as you have the time/space to exercise them they are all wonderful loving dogs with not too many health problems. Would recommend a welsh 100 times over though! We are getting another one in the spring, mine is going to be a dad and we have pick of the litter.

If you could get an old style Springer (haven't seen one since ours was put down last Dcember) or a working cocker, and you gave them both a lot of work to do, or time to blow off steam, you'd be ok. One thing I've been told about Springers - you should cut their legs off until their 4 years old to slow them down! This so applies to our bitch!

I have three springers! they are all very different! one would be happy to sleep on the sofa all day. The other two are also very good. They are fun loving loyal dogs. but.......... they do need good excercise. I work full time and the three are happy at home, and are very good. if im later than usual then it has been known to come home to fluff everywhere - the bed sometimes gets it!

I would never have another breed! they spend over hour at the yard in the morning while im doing the horses, then i take them for a walk so its their own special time, then the same in the evening! They also do agility training once a week!

But with most dogs they are what you make them.

I agree that the stockier springers are much calmer. I have the working smaller type.

I have a 11 month english springer. I love her and wouldnt swop her for the world but she never stops and drives me nuts. She spends most of her days outdoors with us and dives in the dirtiest smelliest puddles she can find and cant stay clean or dry to save her life. She gets that dirty i decided to bath her in the shower so she could shimmy inside the enclosure and keep dirt in the bathroom to a minimum but now expects to shower all the time and climbs in as soon as the door is opened. She has been to gun dog training and is very good but funniest thing is that she can sit and stay but when you turn your back to walk away she wiggles on her belly nearer to me until i turn round then stops just looks. Im just watching it at the moment as i type and its just mooching sniffing and scratching its arse constantly. Really lovely natured and loving little bitch, great for cuddles and really good with my 2 year old boy who pulls her lugs. Oooh and looses so much hair, a hairless variety may be good.
So yep great pets but youve got to have the patience of a saint

Imagine having 5 in one house!!! Plus an irish water spaniel, a cat and various items of horsewear! Everythings hairy at our house! We just have a carpet of dogs, you have to tiptoe through them to get to one side of the house to another!
The funniest thing is we have a large luxury dog kennel with a run in the garden that rarely gets used!

Ours are all quite chilled to be honest, the two older ones are a bit senile and the younger ones turn themselves inside out when theyre giving you a welcome, but unless you wind them up they sleep!!!
I love wire vizlas, got the most gorgeous heads! I take it you show them from your sig? My mum has qualified for crufts with the irish water, its her first time showing any dog, always been strictly into workers not showing!! Shes very nervous!

I've heard a few negative comments about cockers but I have an Springer and he is such a sweatie with a big personality.

He's excitable when people come to the house and thats as mad as he gets really. I wouldnt say he his hyper, he would stay in bed until midday as long as my hubbie was in bed!

He does get good runs in daily which takes the edge of him and hes is from working stock so shorter and stockier than the showing type. I think I love him more than my husband!
