I have show type Cockers and have always been told you never cross a Solid with a parti colour. However having just recieved my new year book I see a stud dog offered who sire's Black ( solid) and Blue roans. Having spoken to the very lovely and knowledgeable lady I am intreigued as to if any of you show or working have crossed the two and what happened? Also what happens generations down the line. I love Tri colour and blue roan and tan and having one achieved these with a bitch I sadly no longer have would aspire to achieve these colurs in a healthy happy cocker again.
Many thanks x

Sorry probably being dim here!! What colour is your bitch?

Not sure I can answer this really, just that my parents had a tri colour bitch, (show cocker) put her to a blue roan and tan dog. From memory (the pups are now 12 years old!!) all pups were tri or blue roan and tan.

I have three girls. One is an orange roan who's grandfather carried the tri colour and blue roan and tan gene. One is a light blue roan ticked who carried the black and white gene and ornage and white. My baby Tallulah ( 3 years old ) is Black and Tan also carries red and black.
Do you know if any of the pups went on to breed and what were the kennel club names of your parents dogs who carried the tricolour and blue roan and tan gene?
Many thanks

None went onto breed sorry, and to be even more vague as it was so long ago all they can remember was that the stud dog was in stoke on trent! Sorry

Good luck anyway!

Heathwise it shouldn't be a problem although years ago when rage was around more it was not uncommon for gold bitches to be mated to blue roans to produce pet puppies that were not gold (I have seen rage and it isn't nice).
Big problem with solid to parti is mismarks as are often seen in puppy farm cockers.

A black stud producing black and roan is actually a roan that is not expressing the colour as roan is dominant (unless of course the roan is coming from the dam.)

Oh how interesting. I would love to know the dominance of the colours so is roan dominant over solid and where do black and white and the and tan colours fit in?

As I understood this stud dog was from mixed lineage as he is from Sweden and due to the smaller gene pool they cross the solids with roans.

It's such an interesting subject isn't it :)
