Perhaps a little off subject ..... does anyone out there know if there is any law stopping someone in a residential area from keeping a cockrell?

Flippin neighbour has decided it is a good idea to keep one and it has started crowing at 4am! Not too much of a problem at the moment as most of our windows are firmly shut but when the summer comes this is going to cause a major issue!

I have read that if they are kept indoors with no windows it should slow the crowing down but I have just walked over there (2 doors down and across the road) and he has it in a small mess-sided coop and there is another cockrell further down the road that is crowing in competition!

Thanks for any help.

Firstly it's a good idea to approach your neighbour about keeping the coop blacked out.

In some residential areas there are bye-laws preventing the keeping of livestock.

Cockerels crowing and causing a disturbance can be dealt with by your local environment officer.

They will ask you to keep a diary of the times and dates of each disturbance and will fit a monitor in your home to record the noise level.

If you are on good terms with your neighbours then obviously talk to them first because relations will deteriorate once a noise abatement enforcement is served by the council.

Probably worth noting that some people believe wrongly you have to have a cockerel with hens in order to get them to lay.

Good luck :)

Thanks guys - this is quite a built up area so totally unreasonable and irresponsible for this guy to think that keeping a cockrell is acceptable behaviour.

I did try speaking to him at 7am - went round and rang on door bell but he didn't answer - I expect he is having a lie-in through lack of sleep! I left a note pinned to the coop asking him to "sort his cockrell out" - it was a lot longer than that and worded nicely but firmly - and have just spoken to the Council who are going to call me back on Monday - great!

Might have to think of calling the local fox mafia round .....
