I've put up a video of Coco schooling recently, he's come really far this year and I'm so pleased with him

We've got a dressage competition in 3 weeks, just a prelim, and I'd like any thought on how I can improve. I know his canter when not on a circle is horrible and unbalanced and I am working on this, it's not particularly good on a cirlce wither but hey he's muchhhh better than he was this time last year

anyway, constructive criticism welcome, here is it...
schooling the boy

Your horse is so cute!
In the canter it looks like you are rocking a bit with your upper body, I would suggest trying to keep a bit stiller.
Also just a tip; when jumping it's good to keep the horse cantering for a while after jumping the grid, as they can get into the habit of dropping back to trot straight after they jump, which isn't good if you want to do a course on them!
Apart from that it looks good

hehe you did see that post then

Coco's dad was a connemara and his mum we think was an irish draught x welsh cob, he's 15hh and 8 years old! He'll turn 9 this summer and we'll have had him for 5 years... that's a scary thought. thanks for the sweet comment

I noticed that too, its something I seem to have recently started doing, which isnt too good! I'll think about that tomorrow

and yeah, he's a lazy sod once he's over the jump I'll try and keep him in canter for longer. He's always been like that in the school but when we do courses he's quite happy to carry on cantering. Thanks for the ideas

oooh and your horse is absolutely gorgeous! what breed is he/she? I love duns

Coco is lovely!! Not sure how old he is but on the video it looks like you should slow your rise down a little and maybe you could do more supplying exercising like serpentines, leg yielding and shoulder in. Regards your dressage test, I would just work on your accuracy for your first test. Good luck, look forward to hearing how you get on.

Hi Millie,

Coco is looking good obviously enjoying life at the moment. Keep working at it you have come so far together!!

I presume your first test this year is with SWDRC? I have had the schedule - might get over to watch as it's the first one of the year!!

Ohh yes, suppling things, that's something we probably don't do enough of, I'll bare that in mind in the next few weeks, thank you
smile.gif
He's 8 years old and I have been told to slow my rise down before, but it always seems to speed up again to match him rather than him slowing down for me, any tips on keeping it under control? thank you, they are some really helpful ideas
smile.gif

yes, our first test will be at the new place they've added to their venues, we're doing the prelim 13 I think

It would be lovely to see you all there, will you be having a go on your boy?

Mine is ID X Connemara, he's 16h 2" but has a funny little pony head!
He's the sweetest horse, although he's a bit lazy.
I love duns too, they're the best!
I'm really bad at rocking my upper body, especially when going from trot to canter.

aww he's very handsom, smart looking boy
smile.gif
hehe there's a dun in the stable next to Coco's who is connemara X warmblood and he has a little pony head too, with the big old body
tongue.gif
I think perhaps the rocking is down to trying to hold myself so as not to be banging on his back when he canters, perhaps that's why you do it too?
smile.gif

Yeah it could be that, also because he is a bit lazy sometimes I try and push him forward a bit too vigorously with my upper body, I do it even more when showjumping!

If you slow your rise down and use gentle half halts it should encourage him to slow down. Just keep saying to yourself slow, slow, slow as you are rising. Good luck.

He looks such a lovely, genuine horse!

Hello! i didnt know you were on here!

Coco's looking well. Hows he doing??

Rosie's doing very very well now. Shes living with 4 geldings out in a field!

I've backed her and she's doing very well.
