Coconut Oil for Pony with Summer Allergy

I was talking to a lady today at our local saddlery and feed shop and happened to mention that our companion pony has this summer allergy whereby she coughs a lot, no mucus just coughing and rather wheezy. The lady said to put virgin coconut oil around her nostrils as it stops them breathing in the pollen and also feed it to her. Now I have just read up about this oil and it has a lot of saturated fats in it which I dont think will be good for the pony. She is a good doer. However, the rubbing it around her nostrils if it worked, I would be happy to do. Has anyone on here ever tried this. I have sent for some antihistamine tablets and was going to give her 4 tablets in each meal so 8 a day, does this sound the right dose. If all this fails she will go onto Ventapulmin. Thanks

You need to be careful with oil and the sun as it can burn. You'd be better off smearing vaseline round the nostrils.

Yes you are quite right. I dont think I will bother with coconut oil after what I have read but will try a little vaseline around her nostrils.

Antihistamine dose is 4 tablets per 100kg body weight. Split into at least 2 feeds.

My pony was coughing a few years back; I'd put it down to a "summer allergy", but she was still coughing into the winter.

I got the vet out: after scoping Equine Asthma was diagnosed.

What I will say is PLEASE don't listen to old wives tales - if your pony is coughing, get the vet out and see what they say.

Just to warn you vaseline conducts heat so not great in hot weather either, when I was on holiday once someone covered Arabi's back legs in it when it 30 degrees, his legs swelled up and emergency vet £200 all his hair fell out as well.

I won't use it on horses at all horrible stuff.

I do use coconut oil on there manes and tails but only apply at night

I’ve used Vaseline smeared inside nostrils for years on many different horses without issue, it doesn’t catch the sun there. For horses who get irritated by the sensation of snot running down their nose. I can’t think that it would help with coughing?

Thank you. I will get the vet who has already seen her and get some Ventapulmin if I get no response from the antihistamine.
