well over here as we are so small obviously there is a limited supply of hay. nomally its fine tho i have never had a problem until this year. as the weather is soooo crap people are only starting to do their first cuts now and even then the weather isnt here to let it dry out. so the option i now have is buy a big round for £50!!!!! (normally £30) from a strange guy or do i wait until my normal farmer has done his? he only charges £30 and is quite old and wise. if i do hang on for my regular supply, mare will have to be out 24-7 for now and i can feed horse hage for a bit. if i buy the £50 hay i really think its been rolled wet therefore will just rot before i can use it. at this rate there will be no hay for winter!! o poo bum.

there are the same problems in Jersey! My mum hasn't cut her crop yet and its depended on for our ponies as £8 for a standard bale of half decent hay is just stupid when I pay £3 a bale in England!! better weather is forecasted apparently so hoping we can get ours cut soon.

I would hold out if you can as long as possible and wait for your normal supplier.

I would go to your regualr supplier offer him £30 a bale and give him the money now. Then you know you are sorted. It might even have some of last years lying around.

Our yard usually makes their own hay, but of course hasn't been able to this year. YO says she has enough to last until December, and is still trying to find some more supplies - but what we've got will have to be rationed. I've said to leave mine out as much as possible, as I think they're going to be better off munching grass. If the situation is still dire getting toward winter, I'm going to invest in some humungous rugs and still leave them out when I can. Clearly we're all going to have problems finding any sort of forage at all this year, so grab what you can!
