Coffin joint

I am gutted.
I have just returned from taking Georgie to the vets. To cut a long story short, late last summer Georgie came in lame on his off hind, very strange action throwing his leg out to the side and dragging his toe. 6 weeks box rest and he came sound. Started light work and he went intermittantly lame on his near fore. Trip to the vets and it was decided nerve blocks no go as it was so intermittant. Advised to turn him out as possibly soft tissue damage from the original hind lameness episode out and see how he gets on. So hes had all winter doing not a lot. Bought him back into work a few weeks ago, everything seemed hunky dory, took him in the shool and wallop, theres that niggly intermittant lameness again.
Back up to the vets this morning and nerve blocks and xrays have shown slight arthritic changes to his coffin joint. Hes got to go back up in the next week or so to have the coffin joint blocked.
He's only 8 and was planning on selling him in the next 12 months which obviously I wont be doing now.
Stories of similar would be appreciated, good and bad so I can get an idea of what we might be facing.

My friends horse was diagnosed with arthritis in coffin joint last year, he like yours is only young - 10 I think. She is planning on turning him away for a year out at grass, then potentially looking to use him as a dressage/light hack horse. Sorry i cant be of more help - dont know anymore details!

Our big horse, Jacob was diagnosed exactly a year ago.He was 8 years old, 16.2hh Clydesdale/ID/cob type. He had Adequan and steroid injections which made no difference.
The farrier fitted natural balance shoes (reshod every 6 weeks)and he was turned out until August. Vet tried Cartrophen injections and he came 99.99% sound. We put him back into work slowly and by xmas he was hunting again. In the last month i have hunted him once a week and he has been sound barring the odd pottery step on flints. The vet has begun IRAP treatment as we all feel that has an excellent chance of keeping him sound.

Tomorrow we are off to visit a hunt in Somerset and go to the beach on sunday

My horse has soft tissue injury to coffin joint ,front leg.Diagnosed nov and treated with adequan and joint injection.He cant cope with anything other than gentle walk in hack 3 times a week .Vet recommended 6 weeks walking every day but he is uncomfortable so I have reduced it to every other day.Im now going for lou and will be retiring him at end of summer if he doesnt make any progress.Hes only 7 so very sad.
It took a long while to diagnose my horse as he had other injuries but if you have caught it early you might be lucky.Hope it works out for you.

My horse had a bony spur on his coffin joint which responded well to a steroid injection. In fact it responded so well that he had one injection about three years ago and as been sound ever since.

Like applecart, my horse had a boney spur on the coffin joint, had a steroid injection a couple of years ago and touch wood, hasn't needed one since. He's in light work and initially had danillon as and when he needed it, but after a few months was fine without. Vet also told me to keep him on Newmarket Joint Supplement.
